    Federal Standards Metal Tag Location

    Hello all,

Great website! I'm new to the board and would like to first say that I really enjoy reading about everyone's Porsche related issues. It gives me ideas and good starting points for my project. I'm restoring a 1969 911E that my father purchased in the early 80's. The car is actually in good shape (and I'd like to post a picture for you all but the file size isn't working out) but there's always something to restore, replace or improve. I drove the car to Pomona for the last swap meet and had a great time talking to the few Porsche enthusiasts that were there (the Porsche parts selection was horrible by the way, but fun none the less). Looking forward to another event.

Anyway my question is about this 1.5" x 1.5" metal plate reading: This motor vehicle conforms to all applicable Federal Motor Vehicle Standards (again, I can't post a picture of it). It was in a box of random parts that I have and after researching I can't find anything on its original location. Does anyone recognize this?

    Thanks in advance,

    Stewart

    Hi Stewart,

Welcome to the Board. You can send me your photos, I would be glad to post them. Send to fryardds@csinet.net

I have seen that plate mounted before just a few times and I think? it is located just below the paint code tag which is located on the driver's side door hinge post.

My '68 Karmann coupe has one of those plates mounted in the exact position Brian says.

    Hey Brian and Tom,

Thanks for the reply. Brian, PM sent...

I guess the federal tag would have to mount under the door hinge then because I don't have space between the paint code tag and hinge.

    Hi Stewart,

Here are the photos of your '69E paint tag and car. I see what you mean about location. You are correct, the Federal tag must be below hinge. Is that where yours is located Tom?

    Good looking longhood, BTW.

Also here is a photo of the Federal tag posted on Pelican. It is interesting to note that Tom's is held on by rivets but it looks like yours was held in place by adhesive.

It is below the door stop strap, but above the lower door hinge. Here's a pic I just took that should be adequate to show the location on my '68, but the car is in the trailer right now and I couldn't get the door open all the way without hitting the sidewall.

Perfect! Thanks a bunch guys. I did notice that Tom's is held in place by the four rivets and mine was originally held by adhesive. I'll most likely stick it on with double sided tape or 3M rubber trim adhesive.

No problem, Stewart. I just noticed you're in San Diego--are you a PCA-SDR member? Come on down to the Q tomorrow (12/16) if you can--the club is holding their last autox of the season. There'll be a bunch of P-car nuts out there to meet. It's the annual "Other Car" autox, so people will be driving all sorts of cars, but there will still be quite a few Porsches (if it doesn't get rained out!)
