Advice on RS clone - back date an SC or update an early car?

    Hi all,
I'm considering building a race car to run in the Toyo 911 Cup spec class. I really want a 73 RS clone, we will run a 3.0L SC motor.

My question is, for those that have built RS clones. Is it easier/less expensive to start with an early tub and put wide flares on it, or is it easier to start with an SC? I know the SC lines won't be an exact match with a 73 RS, but with bumper replacements it would be reasonably close.

If anyone has built a clone from and SC I'd like to see pictures.

    Thanks!

Mark, you might want to kick this around with Dave B. at TRE.

I'm pretty sure he's familiar with both approaches.

I'd prefer to backdate an SC since they're more plentiful than Chebbies.

Hello: Buy a SC and backdate it. The rear of the car is very easy. You just cut off the rear reflector holding panel and install the RS bumber. The front is the trick with the front latch area with the long hood. The fenders just replace with glass ones. You will have the stronger gearbox, trailing arms and the 3.0 engine already. The SC will less likely to have rust issues. Now you just have to find a non sunroof SC. Thanks Eric

Dave also sells the "trick" long hood that matches the SC striker, so you are all set with TRE stuff...

That said, it's not THAT simple. You need front bumper, rear bumper, hood, fenders, tail, turn signal units, lenses, grills, mirrors, figure out if you can live with the black trim around the glass, modern dash, and so on ! It's simple but neither trivial nor cheap.

I'll do mine someday. I'm waiting for its engine to die so I don't feel bad cutting her up while she gets a rebuild. Could be a while, she's only got 170000 miles, could be good for another 150K ;-) Damn SCs are unkillable ;-) She's eating as much oil as gas (Ok, slight exageration), but still purrs like a kitten !

PS; that said, having owned a 73 and currently a 69 912, I don't think an SC will ever feel like a 73RS, no matter what. There's just a heavier feel to the steering and handling, more solid, less playful....
