    Ownership History

How does one go about getting a detailed ownership history of a car?

I know in most cases it is something that passes from owner to owner, but is there a trace or search that can be done to show that?

    Thanks,

    John .

Every state differs, but about ten or fifteen years ago most states passed privacy acts that prevent the Dept. of Licensing from giving out prior owners names or contact information. Since the cars we are interested in do not have a 17 digit VIN, carfax info is of course not available either.

But you can find out when the title was transferred and usually a name - no address.

Most DMVs will forward a letter from you to the prior owner. You can say how great they kept the car (even if they didn't) and ask that they contact you.
