    Targa Prototype

    Don't know much about this, but it is labeled Targa Prototype (body-color hardtop?). 2nd photo is some sort of prototype top (fabric?). 3rd is the debut at Frankfort.

    wow, thats really different. the biggest things i see that you havent pointed out are the wheels.

    the steel wheels in the 1st pic are for 356s with the old shoe style brakes. dont know why they woud have those on a 901 body.

    and for some reason the fuchs look odd in the last pic.. maybe its the spaces in between the pettals, or maybe its the ligs in the center or somthing.. anyways somthing just looks off and i cant place it.

    170 views and nobody knows what this thing is?? Can somebody ID the year of the VW in the background. It makes no sense that they would use a 356 or 356 running gear to make the prototype sense the coupe was already on the market - i.e., just chop the top off of a coupe. Maybe this is just somebody mating an early Targa to a 356 chassis for some weird reason.

    i dont think it wouldbe 356 running gear. i dont even thing it could mate that well. granted a 912 has a 356SC engine, but gear, suspension etc? i doubt it.

    perhaps it just has shoe brakes? maybe its the worlds 1st kit car for vws?

    I like the roll-up targa roof in the 2nd picture, if that's indeed what it is.

    Jerry;
    Two pics of 13360. As a prototype, it's had mock Targa bars, mock soft top
    and mock tonneau. It was the display car at the '65 Frankfurt Auto Show where the Targa was introduced. Later used as a mule for 911S development (hence unnumbered 4 1/2" Fuchs), etc. Original 30,000 km and supposedly sent to the crusher in late '66.....

    cheers
