I was about 14 in 1973 when I started with 1/12 scale Jerobee .049 gas cars racing in Orange County in the parking lot of the now gone Briggs Cunningham museum.
Raced 6 cell 1/12 when that was popular.
    1/8 sacle after that.
I tried carpet once and really enjoyed the traction!
My only RC now is a 2 channel flying wing glider used for combat/dog fights.
The slot thing is fun and competive too.
Afterall it's not about the speed it's all about the competition.

And to think I still own my very first 'slot car set'. Its the AFX Model Motoring set, HO guage, endorsed by Jackie Stewart, circa 1968. It came with an XKE, and early Mustang. I must have 120 feet of track, 10 cars, and all the choice bits of the era. That small a guage is extremely tricky to drive fast and keep stuck. Ah, the hours I spent trying to master sliding through the corners with out fishtailing off. Those were great days.
