I have the same transmission for both sixes and my SWB – the late 1971 type 911. The only difference is the linkage.

I think a significant part is the 914 side shift selector is a better design than the 901/911. Another is I tend to be into the linkage more often on the race car and the hotrod street six.

Another part is a six has a white plastic joint at the firewall. It allows no play where the 911 at the back of the tunnel allows fore-aft play. The linkage at the shifter is the same.

Part of super slick shifting is selecting the right (good used) syncros, new sliders, the mid-year stops & bands, perfect OE engagement dogs and good fitting forks. Since I change gear ratios so often, those parts are regularly attended to.

    Best,
    Grady

    Rick,

I would like to buy that tranny if the other guy passes. I'm regearing the 914-6 (to AFKAQX) and I could use a few of the cogs out of that box (specifically the F and the ZD). I'll take it for $250.

My 901 box is pretty brilliant, but that is interesting about the linkage. Thanks!

Too late. I need gears for the Six. 2.2S MFI with a short box in a 914 with flares and big rubber. This should be fun!
