That was a 1961 Karmann hardtop. What a pity. I'd rather have seen its roof cut off to turn it into a faux cabrio, as is the fate of many of that model, than to end up like this...

Doubtful. That's a 1962 Karmann hardtop, which is a T6 body (twin grill, wider hood, etc). The 1961 rusty tub is a T5 body (single grill, narrower hood, etc). You'd have to do a lot more than just cut off the roof to make _that_ body change...

OTOH, with a silly amount of time and money it could eventually end up like this:

Sorry, that's a T6 body (one of 699, VINs 201601-202299), not just a T5 with an external fuel fill. Other T6 characteristics that can be seen are the more squared-off front edge of the hood, and fresh air intakes on the cowl just ahead of the windshield. It should also have a twin grill engine cover.

Of course, there were only 1,048 T5 Karmann hardtops built. It's not as if a T6 notch is that rare as compared to the T5. All the way around it was a short lived model, generally unloved both then and now. The twin grill _Roadsters_, OTOH...

Perhaps rather than T5 you're thinking "a 356B with external filler." The 356B could be either a T5 body ('60-'61) or a T6 body ('62-'63). It all makes for great confusion, and great fun.

My dad owned #202248, a Notchback T6 Super. He bought it from his boss, Jack McAfee, back in the '70s (worked at McAfee's Porsche-Audi dealership in Burbank , CA). Jack had the motor rebuilt at 50K miles with an Isky cam and 1750cc big bore pistons/cylinders (about 110 hp I think), plenty quick.

Sweet car. Still running around my hometown, driven by a 90-year-old man! It was special ordered in Black with a Red Leather interior......now, it's got maybe 120k miles from new.

    DROOL....

If and when I get the means, it will be the next car I buy.
