Thread: Black bosch coil

  1. #21
It's a sad day when you can't depend on a Bosch ignition coil. Has anyone tried buying one from Porsche? It seems that they usually have "the good stuff."

Tom - the silver coil is the 'factory' Porsche coil. Got mine from the dealer.

Just a thought, but has anyone tried to reverse engineer a replacement? Measuring the resistance and inductance will get the basics and should be enough info to take to MSD or Mallory, or ?? and see what they can do. There may be one off the shelf.

The MSD High Vibration coil #8222 works perfectly. The only problem is it doesn't look original, if that matters to you. It's the same size as a normal coil. I have an 8222 in my road kit, just in case I have a problem with the Bosch.

    Brazilian Wax

Here is a pic of my Brazilian Bosch coil. Run for the last 11 months & 4000 miles. You can already see wax coming out of the coil. Nice
How's that for longevity? Only a matter of time....
Someone at Bosch needs to do something about this quality issue.

Fortunately I found a NOS version still in the box, plus 2 good spares for back-up. You could use the MSD version, remove the chrome sticker & apply some Bosch coil sticker for that authentic look.

Another silver coil hater here. I was troubleshooting an ignition problem on my '79SC and the new silver coil didn't fit in the old retainer (it's diameter slightly larger) and it made my car run much worse; popping and backfiring during high RPM liftoff. Turns out the coil had nothing to do with the initial problem (arcing plug wires) but the coil was certainly malfunctioning and of course it was a poor looking substitute for the original.

These coils may be another hard to find item in the future. Now that Porsche is replacing some obsolete parts maybe they should think about a quality black replacement.

    Looks really nice Chris.

What is the correct part # for the black CDI coil I would need for my cars? Thanks.

    Red face coil #

The correct black bosch or the made in Spain one (also good) is o.221.121.001. But that is the same # on the silver that nobody wants. Regards Chris Early S reg.#205

That's good info. So the 8222 coil will work with the CDI box? - like what's found on a 72T.
