    strut advise

I'm going to replace my shocks at some point in the near future.

I'm pretty sure my 1973 2.4S still has its original Koni front struts ( 3.5" caliper spacing, no bottom pin ) which are now painted black.

My question is , for optimum performance / handling on the road should I stick to the Koni struts & refit new Koni inserts or should I go down the Bilstein route which would mean more expense as I would need to buy new complete struts ?

BTW, the car is / will be slightly lower than euro height & is running elephant polybronzes all round

    James,

    My '73S is/was a Koni car...
I decided to finally replace them with Koni sports all the way round...

This is what I ran into...
After all was squared away I love them...

This might be one of your options...

    Hope this helps,

    Cheers,

    Koni Adjustment?

    Hi Chuck,

Can you tell us the front and rear adjustments on your Konis?

Do you change the adjustments when you go to the track?

Are the Koni Sports much harsher than the old Koni Reds for street use?

    Thanks,

    Koni Rebuild Service

    James,

If as you say your S has its original Koni shocks, please note that each one has a date code stamped into the bottom.

If you are keeping the car original, you should consider sending them to Koni for service to retain the date codes. Also, make certain to tell them you want to retain the features of the original hardware.Do not send them any loose fittings etc. you will not get them back...

They will be returned painted Koni orange. Then, get yourself a set of the original style Koni wing decals that are available from various resto shops and put em on there. Beats the Koni Classic replacement shocks, IMHO.

    Tom is right ...
I have kept all the stuff from the originals (replaced in 1986) and will some day send them in...

    Bert,

Got the rears at one off of stiff... the fronts about 1/2 turns from stiff... so far I don't mess with'm when I go to the track... but I might...

    Hope this helps,

is the date code stamped on the strut or the insert?

Anyone know the approx cost of Koni refurbing my original units?

Chuck, I like the sound of the Koni sports. How much stiffer do they make the ride compared to the original spec?

I'm still trying to decide wether to retain the koni or move over to Bilstein

i had my koni's rebuilt with sports valving and found that with a combination of 50 & 55 series tires ride was noisy/harsh at relatively slow speeds although once you "nail it" is was just fine.not expensive probably less than 50% of new price although i think a new set is probably proposition in long term.

also having bought bilsteins for other cars that i have owned i think they are probably a better shock absorber all round but more expensive price again.

Thanks Chuck. Do your Koni Sports feel very harsh on the street? Or are they an acceptable compromise for street/track?
