I Hereby Nominate Myself for a Darwin Award

I acquired a set of H1s to replace the ugly U.S. headlights on my ’71. I took one of them apart (as one of the trim rings is damaged and needs to be restored), carefully laying it out on my workbench. I even put everything on a soft cotton towel so that nothing would get damaged. What I failed to notice, however, was the precariously balanced hammer sitting on the edge of a shelf right above it.

I returned a few days later to find the (formerly) nice original Bosch H1 lens in pieces, with the hammer sitting sheepishly next to it on the workbench. The hammer isn’t talking, but we both know he did it.

I’m posting this as a community service message on how not to prepare H1s for your 911.

The moral of the story? I’m an idiot.

    John

Please, someone take pity upon me and make me feel better about myself, selling me a Bosch H1 lens (see my post in the classifieds).

That's great news, and thanks! Is it identicle to the originals (wording, letters, etc.)? The image is very small on their site and I can't see enough of the detail.

    Amen...

Consider yourself blessed as a set of brand spanking new H1's in the box was going for $1800 last weekend at the Swapmeet. SWB Sam had a nice set for $1200...

    Go in peace...

As far as I know they are not identical, the old H1s have the letteres raised on the glass, while the new ones don't, the letters seem to be either embeded in the glass or raised on the inside of the glass. Someone else should be able to confirm this. They are however Bosch OEM, but apprently Bosch changed it's production method.

    You are correct...

I just opened the box on my new one, bought last month. You are correct in that they are raised on the inside not the outside as my originals are but markings are the same.

Likely just a production run change for whatever reason. Perhaps they're more aerodynamic

We're fortunate they are still available from Bosch.

Just because he was at the scene doesn't mean he did it. I think you may be jumping to conclusions. Did you get statements from any eye witnessess such as the WD40 tin or the screwdriver? I would hate to see the hammer going down without any concrete evidence. Could be a travesty of justice.

Looks like I lost a raised-lettered version in the accident.

The cans of paint looked the other way when I asked if anyone had seen anything. I admit it, I don't like the look of the hammer, and we've never gotten along well. He is more of my wife's hammer, playing second-fiddle to my hammers in the toolbox in the garage.

    Forensics is dusting right now.
