    MFI fuel pump dying?

My 70E w/ MFI started running poorly today.
Misses under load, will not idle at stop lights , wants to die. Fuel pump noise has changed...was loud at start-up, now is a muted/faint sound.
Oil smells of fuel contamination. I need to check the fuel screen in the tank to see if it's contaminated/clogged. The changing noise in the pump & fuel smell in the oil, makes me wonder if the pump is dying.
I had a fuel pump quit on my once in an air-cooled VW that dumped raw fuel into the oil. What do these symptoms sound like to you? Money for the parts guy?

    Thoughts?

It does sound like your fuel pump may be dying but that shouldn't have anything to do with fuel smell in your oil.

I would check the fuel filter and gas tank screen first. Clogged filters will kill pumps. If your filters are fine then the fuel pump is probably on it's way out.

The fuel odor in the oil could mean your running rich or your trips are too short for your motor to get to warm running condition so it's rich from cold running.

I know some people block off the oil lines to the injection pump to avoid contamination of the oil but I'm not sure how the oil circuit of the injection pump can get fuel in it. I guess maybe if the seals are bad?

I've always considered the glass to be half full...that is until I reached middle age and realized that it is actually half empty.

    Bobby,

Thanks, I'll check the filter screen 1st. I suspect it may be clogged, as the pump sounded fine this morning, so it may be working harder w/ a clogged screen, hence the change in pump tone.

Replaced the tank filter/strainer. Old one was heavily varnished. Pump was replaced by the PO about 3 years ago. Pump now sounds better, car runs fine, even has better throttle response. Changed oil, ran it hard, fuel smell is gone.

    Thanks again ,
