Should my car have a hand throttle?

It's a '67 that started life as a 912. While dialing in my carbs after a rebuild, and putting a brick on the gas pedal to adjust high speed balance I was thinking it sure would be nice to have a hand throttle. So what years had them? I noticed while under the car the other day that there are 4 gray cables coming out of the body, 2 for the heater "flaps" and 2 just coiled up not doing anything. Could one of these be for a hand throttle?

    Thanks in advance
    Dave

    Dave,

That is an easy conversion and very worthwhile.

You will need to find a salvage emergency brake assembly from a ’69 and later. If your E-brake housing has a slot at the rear and the opening to the tunnel, you don’t need that part.

The parts you will need are the handle, a white plastic piece that attaches to the handle, the barrel stop that clamps onto the throttle rod, the longer shaft the arm pivots on, the two cork friction washers and the two steel washers.

If you want to get carried away, at the same time you can update to two independent heater controls on the same shaft.

Installation is an easy ½ Saturday.

    Best,
    Grady

    Grady,

Thanks much, I'll check on the housing, then give parts heaven a call.

The 'extra' heater cables are there because 912's have two sets of heater cables. One pair went to the valves/flappers mounted to the car and the second pair opened and closed the flaps on the heater boxes attached to the engine. The second pair of cables on a 912 allowed a 356 engine to work in a 911 body. When you install the hand throttle, you might want to consider pulling out the extra cable.

Here's a slight derail: If your car already has a throttle cable, how hard would it be to run a second cable for an MFI throttle enrichment device, like the one Henry sells?
