    M-Type Caliper Finish

    Hi Guy's,

    Sorry more questions!

Should my 65 brake calipers be Yellow Pasivated Zinc? Someone mentioned to me that they may have been a silver color, but there's a witness of them being yellow/gold. Can someone confirm?

    Cheers
    David

I don't think there was any plating done to the early cast iron brake calipers. The gold color plating wasn't used until the light alloy S calipers came out. The factory repair manual even refers to the early "grey-cast fixed M and L calipers" in several places in the supplements to Volume I.

    Thanks Tom,

Does anyone else know if the early calipers were plated?

    Cheers

I've been told that the 64-65 356 calipers were gold, I'm not sure on a 64, 65 or 66 911. I'm not even sure the 356 calipers were gold, anyone know?

    Thanks John,

They are the same as 356C callipers, so I would've thought it was some part bin shopping for the early 911's. Someone must have an original car that hasn't had it's brakes stripped off. My car looks like it has kept three of it's original calipers and when I split them in half, the mating surface is gold. The outside is too nasty to tell. Anyone got any photo's?

    Cheers

    David,

I have been showed by Jim Breazale (EASY) that a 356 rear caliper is NOT the same as an early 911. From the front I know that a 911 disc is about 1 mm thicker. BTW there is a substantial price difference (like $50 a frt. disc) between 356 and 65/911 (cheaper).

    Regards,

    Richard

    Hi Richard,

That's interesting. What colour are the calipers on your car?

    Cheers

They are dull silver; I went through about a dozen old ones last week. Some were just rust colored from weathering.

Racing "stuff" is a different story.

I wonder why David had the mating surface in gold. Any ideas? I'm getting ready to retore mine.

I've seen some 904 parts calipers (NOS) that were gold. In the boxes from the factory.
