    Which S is beSt

I'm looking to buy an S after selling my T. Can someone tell me their driving impressions of a 69 2.0 vs 70/71 2.2 vs 72/73 2.4 cars.

i think since these are nearly 40 yr old cars you will want to buy the best speciman you can find, an apples to apples comparison in the real world of condition and price will be tough. if it were possible to have equal quality cars to choose from everyone will have their own opinion as to the best model yr based on their driving preference. best of luck with the search just buy the best you can afford and find.

To me the chrecteristics of the S's are not that much different. Overall most people tend to like to 2.2 the best, still short (66 mm) stroke and high compression Vs. the 70.4 mm stroke and lower compression of the 2.4's. Some people tend to believe the 915 is a much better gearbox than the 901 but my experience is a well set up 901 shifts very nicely, but they are a weaker box. You can't wrong with any of them if you ask me.

Just a couple of things to consider (from my VAST experience )...

    • SWB cars are more tail-happy than LWB cars (and to some that is a good thing)
    • The 2.2 ltr cars have a very high compression ratio, typically requiring an octane boost over premium gas whereas the 2.4 will run on regular all day with its lower compression ratio

Nothing sounds quite like a 2.0 S at full wail... To each their own.

i know this doesn't answer your question but...i agree with boxster on this.

i have only owned my modified T since November but one thing i have determined for certain: When (not if) i buy another longhood i will be shopping for the best condition and color/model will be the absolute least of my concerns.

    Condition,condition,condition...

In particular the chassis. Mechanical issues can always be resolved, albeit expensive at times, but the chassis is the foundation. The percentage of straight, unrusted chassis to all the rest is small.

All things being equal I really like the 2.2S. If someone had a bored out 2.2 to 2.5S that would be alright with me as well.

I will echo the theme here: the best early S is the best one you can find, any displacement, any color. I prefer the short crank of the 2.0 - 2.2, but the 2.4 is great in its own way. My opinion is that the ratings in the above link are CRAP, but the feedback is spot on.
