    They're Still Out There!

I am currently second in line for the following car that I saw today, three miles from my house:

    o 1971 911T Targa
o Original Owner - Orthopedic surgeon and seaplane pilot - Bought it new and still
    has original window sales sticker
    o 200,000 miles
o Repainted at 100K miles - original white, door jambs & engine
    compartment still original (original stickers)
o Not a trace of rust or collision damage, not a trace
o Original engine, rebuilt at 100K, runs great
    o Original hounds-tooth interior
o Original deep 6" wheels with hearts
    o Perfect door pockets
o Only thing non-original is the radio

Want to guess what the asking price is? (Unfortunately it looks like the first person in line is going to buy it.)

    Cheers,
    John Audette

I hope the buyer ahead of me is not a flipper. The asking price is $13,500.

    Red face wheels with hearts

Wheels with hearts were made for 69 and 70 cars. Wheels without the hearts are actually more rare because deep 6's for the 1971 year made without the hearts were cut short because I know of some 1971 cars that were made late in the production run for 1971 that already had the flat 6 of the 1972 and beyond. I don't have the VIN of the '71 that is for sale here, so I don't know the production date, but I do know with certainty that the wheels on it are the original wheels. The car is still owned by the original owner and he has never replaced them.

One thing that I learned working with 356's, which I'm sure applies to early (and maybe late) 911's as well, is that Porsche never wasted *anything*. They used parts until they were gone. So sometimes it's difficult to determine an exact date for when a part is transitioned.

    Regards,
    John

I'll second that. I had a 67 911 for 20 years that came with a 4 speed. Until just recently I was dumbfounded as I was, over these years, assailed by Porsche "experts" that 911 cars were only built with 5 speeds. When recently reading a authoritive publication which stated, in 1967 when the 912 line was switched over to 911 production the first cars used the remaining 912 4 speeds in the begining production of the touring models. The rear identification was still 911 not 911T.

Not sure why this is so special... 200,000 miles?! Engine's been rebuilt. Exterior's been resprayed but it wasn't a bare metal job. Doesn't have the original radio. No sport seats. It's a Targa. And it's a T. I mean, I think the guy ahead of you probably found a good buy but then what else needs replacing mechanically? Tranny has 200,000 miles on it with no rebuild? I gotta say there are plenty of non-original drivers like this for sale all over the place, probably for more $$$, but they certainly have a lot fewer miles on the clock.
