Thread: fan strap colour ?

    fan strap colour ?

I have just been checking the 'RS Book' & my owners manual.

From all the period photos of 1973 2.4S & 2.7RS engines that the fan strap is painted black. On all these photos it doesn't show any sticker attached to the strap.

So am I correct to refinish my strap in black with no sticker?

    James,

Yes the fan strap is black, but with a rectangular gold colored 2.7 SC timing decal for the RS. The 2.4S would have a different decal though. If you need a photo let me know I will shoot and post it.

    Fan Strap Change

The color of the fan strap changed from black to the goldish zinc-plated color for all 911's, including the RS, at some point in the later stages of 1973 model year production. These are the fan straps that are secured with one hex bolt instead of two hex bolts.

I don't know the date, but I'm certain somebody here does. But if you have two bolts it should be black. If you have a single bolt it should be zinc plated. Here are some pictures, both from a 1974 Euro Carrera (same as the RS motor), but the look is the same for later '73.

    Fan Sticker

Oh, yes, You can probably make it out in the photo, but the 73 RS decal is the same as this 74 decal.

    It says "911 SC - 2,7l"

    Cheers.

    J-P,

You are so right. There was a running change made on the fan strap during the '73 MY to the one bolt, goldish finish strap.

    James,

My RS was born Jan. 16, '73 and has a black strap with 2 bolts, the same as your 2.4L S.

That certainly makes sense. Bill, you must have one of the last ones off the line for the model year! Cool.

I didn't realize this was a running model year change in '73. Thanks for the info.

Any insight as far as the reason for the running change? Less cost due to finish, one less bolt and labor time to install? - or is there some sort of improvement?
