    CV bolts

I replaced all four CV joints on my car 6 months ago because the boots were tearing and the bolts were backing out (plus they had 150k mi on them).

I adjusted the parking brake yesterday and noticed a couple of the bolts had backed out. I used new lock washers and new bolts on the new CV joints. Any tricks to the trade to keep them from backing out? Thought I was done messing with the CV's for a while.

    Thanks,

    Chris

Use new Schnoor serrated lock washers. Make sure you clean all the grit and grease away from the bolts - especially the threads and those in the hole. Use a test tube brush and/or a Q-tip dipped in brake cleaner until you don't see any more grease on it. Torque properly. I have seen them drilled and safety-wired before (one each), but I think it's overkill... then again, I've never had one come loose at speed (knocking wd).

Check torque after 500 miles. Lots of info on Pelican re: this subject.

Pelican sells them. Do a catalog search for "cv joint lock washer". Also McMaster-Carr.

They seem to be no longer available at Pelican.

I once drilled and safety wired the CV bolts on my 914-6, and will not do this again.

As we all know (and I should have), safety wire only keeps the bolt from coming out - it does not keep it tight. My bolts loosened a bit, but I could not retorque them with the safety wire in place. I just made more work for myself.

THe answer, as stated, is new serrated washers and proper torquing. I suppose a bit of loc-tite couldn't hurt...

    Try McMaster Carr @ http://www.mcmaster.com page 3144

Belleville Spring Lock Washers, Serrated, Nonserrated

Also called conical washers, these washers resist loosening due to heat and vibration. Serrated— Small grooves grip by uniformly pressing against surfaces. Nonserrated— Wider and stronger than serrated washers. 18-8 Stainless Steel —Excellent corrosion resistance. May be mildly magnetic. Rockwell hardness is C38-C52 for inch sizes and B80 for metric. All steel washers are made of C1060-C1075 steel. Rockwell hardness is C42-C52. Black-phosphate steel is mildly rust resistant. .
