    RE-stamping dates in wheels????

Reading a post by a Registry member looking for a specific date-stamped wheel for his '73, I saw a short post stating that one of the well-known wheel refinishers will restamp your Fuchs with any date you want. Can this be true?

I'm not looking for names, but if any refinishing outfit is committing this fraud I think it's awful. Taking a "molested" car and working to bring it back to correctness is a passionate, sometimes frustrating, but exciting form of restoration. Taking a short cut not only defeats the purpose of the whole thing, you'd be defrauding anybody you sold the car to, or any judge that tallied up points on the car (if shows are your thing).

If he's telling the truth there is a new low in the early fans Porsche world.

    edited for politeness...

i made that post purely to inform people of what i had been told.

i wasn't trying to stir anything up.

the simple fact is i recently some saw restored wheels and the owner mentioned that part of the process was making all of the date stamps match.

i, like you, don't condone it.

ps. perhaps a PM would have been polite before accusing me of "trying to stir up emotions and cause problems"

The purpose of my post was to address the issue, not attack anybody. I didn't mention the thread or the person who posted. Sorry if it came off like I was sending anything your way. Glad to hear you are on the same side of the line.

I am not into number matching myself but have been around long enough to hear and see how it works.

Wheels: fill it w/ tin and restamp the number you want
Inkt stamps (for gauges, senders, etc): have your own stamps make.

I don't like the idea either, I know of steel wheels that have been repunched with date stamps. Seems like fraud to me.
