    new obsession

    hey all,
i've been working on restoring my floorboards.
mine are pretty beat up. for those of you with low milage originals ,
    a couple of questions.
do they have a finish or raw wood?
mine are quite dark, is that age? should they be light in color?
i plan on writing this up for the esses when i'm done.
    thanks for your input..

Do you mean that tar and horsehair composite laid down on the floor boards?

Are you referring to the foot boards?

The wooden panels? If so, I believe they are painted black.

    yes, the plywood boards.
mine don't seem to be painted, just dark with age.
i know you can buy new ones in aluminum or plastic.
but i'm trying to fix mine up.
sacto, do you think the black paint is original?
anyone else want to chime in?

Mine seem to have been painted black. There is still black on the edges of the boards, but the rest seems to have faded/been absorbed/worn off. Wood grain is clearly visible now.

They look to be untreaded plywood in both my cars. I belive the ones in my 73S are original.

    Robert,

As close as I've been able to get is regular ply with a 'Teak Black' or 'Black Walnut' wood stain on it...

    Hope this helps,

    Cheers,

    thanks all,
it sounds like a black stain, not paint, would be correct.
any idea what happens with time?
    does the stain fade?
do the inevitable water leaks and wet footwear wash it off?
    the plot thickens.
    can anybody post some photos?
