Thread: Pulled my gas tank yesterday-let the scraping begin!

Pulled my gas tank yesterday-let the scraping begin!

This will be a bit basic for many of you guys but i will chronicle my trunk/pan rehab just in case anyone is interested.

Pulled tank for 3 reasons; 1-refurb tank/trunk 2-assess rust in front pan 3-replace fuel lines.

    It came out surprisingly easy.

    Coupla things i've learned/noted so far;
-backwards spark plug socket is perfect fit for drain plug in gas tank.
-long handled hex wrenches are nice to have
-PB Blaster is nice to have (one tank hold down bolt was stuck very tight)
-gasoline odor stays on your skin for a looooong time

That looks familiar! I'm doing the same thing. Although I think I need to replace my tank.

I just did the same and finished my tank today! Its been sandblasted, POR-15, etchprimer, Wurth SKS(could only get black) and 2K grey painted. I ended up using JB Weld, instead of welding, to repair 4 pin sized holes all located in the same spot.

    Good luck

    "2K grey painted"

What kind of gray paint did you use?

And was it sprayed or brushed on?

So when are you gonna put it back to GREEN?

37yrold911; it a Du Pont/Sikkens 2Kpaint. Only the POR-15 is brushed, the rest spayed. The 2K is resistant against fuel etc. I could not get hold of the grey Wurth SKS in Europe, only the black so I "had to" paint it to get it close to original look. Not perfect but good enough for the 1971T.

72targa; Not into the Green, its going into the Tangerine

Peter are you referring to that glorious color peeking out from under all that hateful black nastiness?

The answer is 'when i have an extra $6k sitting around that the wife doesn't know about. It is already a given that the car will be returned to its original color. Wife loves conda green as well. Of course if i'm going to be stripping the car bare for a blasting/painting i will be refurbing every other damn part as well so i guess that $6k for paint needs an additional who knows what for other small parts to go with it!

As it is people look at the car and comment how nice it looks and how great the paint is. They don't know how to react when i start talking repaint.

I know just how you feel, except when I explain to others that the 911 will soon return to its green past all [non-Porsche] folk cringe and say the red looks good...
