There's a fine line between genius and insanity.

One thing I have learned hanging with artists is that creativity in some people cannot be contained--even when major normalizing forces conspire to force them to conform and be "regular" (parents/schools/laws/societal conventions, etc.), it just leaks out. They can't help it. The stuff just boils up in their brains and they have to express it, even when they don't quite know what it means. Some of it can be scary (the "insanity" part) and some can be enchanting and inspiring. Some is just droll and mundane. It takes all kinds.

I like this guy's stuff. You'd need a helluva big studio or back yard to build and display it, though. Pretty unconventional. The more accessible commercial "product" available seems to be the DVDs they are hawking for 15 euros at the end.

A Swiss Dada'ist(?) whose "Sculpture Kinetic" had always delighted me. He exhibited a machine in New York that was supposed to destroy itself (it failed and the New York Fire Department had to finish it off). His Swiss Tourist Machine at the Swiss Transport Museum is pleasant and his Water Clock at the Geneva Airport is/was superb (it kept terrible time and the city fathers never got the joke). His works dot the Swiss landscape where there lack of function is treasured as delightful counterpoint to the Swiss ethos.
