Thread: what's the plastic thingy in my gas tank?

what's the plastic thingy in my gas tank?

I just talked with the radiator shop that is cleaning my tank and the guy says 'i was ready to pressure test it and gave it one last cleaning which produced bits of brownish plastic that are apparently coming from a plastic 'tray' that is in the tank'.

my car is a '70 but lord only knows what tank i have. the tank has two hookups towards the center rear bottom along with the usual sender and filler holes.

anybody know what this plastic thing is and if i can do without it? i have webers btw.

    thanks,

    erik

    plastic thing

    Hi,

Isn't it the bottom of the fuel sender? This one is fixed with a small nut, may be that has been fallen off? Is it round with two small recesses on both sides?

    Erik,

I just checked a 73 911 tank that I have and it has a circular plastic "tray" that looks like it is around the pick up tube.....the "tray" color is white with a brown old gas stain tint to it.... I know the 914 tanks have a metal "tray" around the pick up to help keep the fuel around the pick up tube...stops the sloshing away from the tube....now my 66 911 tank has nothing...just wide open...

after reading the thread linked above i have learned this piece is called a 'whirl pot'. apparently mine has some pieces broken off and possibly does not have the lid attached (i'm guessing there is a lid based on the pictures in that thread). i now will have to decide if i want to a)use it as is b)cut the tank open and try to replace/fix the whirl pot or c)send tank to 'renu' franchise and let them deal with it or d) order a new tank from performance products.

any opinions on which option is best?

how tough is it to re-weld a piece onto the tank if i choose to cut/weld myself?
