Thread: I need some help from someone with a 356 Parts Manual.

I need some help from someone with a 356 Parts Manual.

This may seem like a strange request but I think it's worth a shot.

I'm restoring a '66 911. The engine fasteners, in particular the 8mm nuts that hold the case together, are cadmium plated, and use black oxide wave washers to lock the nuts in place.

Now, the version of the 65-68 parts manual that I own has been updated. In the update, which is from November, 1967, the specification called out in my manual is "M 8 DIN 985-6S verz. SW 13" which decodes to Metric 8mm nut, conforming to Deutsche Industrie Normen specification No. 985, property class 6S, galvanized, distance across the flats 13mm.

If you look up DIN 985, it's a Nylon lock nut. Which is wrong, the orignial nut is NOT a nylon lock nut, it's a plain nut. Which is specified in DIN 934. When PAG updated the PET they eliminated all the old standards (DIN merged with ISO a few years ago) but like any large database project, they left a few original specs lingering in the manual that weren't cleaned up, and from this I know that DIN 934 was specified for a few metric nuts.

What would be helpful to confirm that I'm on the right track with DIN 934 would be for someone with a 356 Parts Manual to open it up to the "engine" section and check the specification called out for one of the 8mm hexagon nuts that hold the engine case together. I could give you a number like 900 076 025 02 but I don't think it will be right as I believe a "900" number came in with the 911. Anyway, next to that nut there should be a spec. If you would kindly let me know what it says, I would apprecaite it very much. I will then track down the original DIN spec (from DIN, which is still around) and find out exactly what the size and finish is supposed to be.

Thanks in advance for any assistance that may be provided.

    John,

From my 6/66 updated 911 partsmanual:

    900.076.025.02

    M 8 DIN 934-6S SW13 verz.

    From my 356B parts manual:

    900.076.013.02

    M 8 DIN 934-6S SW13 verz.

Richard, THANKS! That is EXACTLY the information I needed.

This board is a tremendous resource that we are fortunate to have.

When I begin assembly I will definitely post some photos.
