Buying '70 911S, are these engine/VIN numbers matching or at least close?

    Hi there,

I have a chance to buy a '70 911S, which is VIN XXXXX0519 and engine number XXX0081. The other numbers are correct for a '70 S but the production number for the chassis and engine seem far apart to me.

How can I tell if this is a numbers matching car? Is there a way to confirm that the numbers match without getting all of the info that comes with the $100 (and three month wait) certificate?

How far off can the numbers be? 400+ seems like a lot.

    Thanks for your help.

Seems like quite a spread - My restoration project is # 0247 and has engine # 0344 - correct as per COA.

If the car has the original service manual the engine number should be recorded in that.

    I have the following COA's for 911 S's
    1969 119301268 Engine # 6391817
    1969 119301269 Engine # 6391798
    1970 9110301201 Engine # 6301622
    1973 9113301092 Engine # 6331731
It seems possible to me that this original engine.

The COA's are taking about 3-4 weeks to get right now, they leave a lot to be desired but they do have engine serial #.

Its not very likely its correct, its to far off. Get a COA or send the factory a mail like I did. The second time I got the head mecanic at my P. shop to send them a mail. But who knows, maybe they put one of the early engines aside, and installed it in a later chassis?

Here's good data point for you - I have 1970 S Coupe VIN #40, the engine number is 78. All original, and I have the COA as well.
