CA black and yellow plates may be back???

As I understand it, AB462 passed and is waiting to be signed by Arnold. Supposedly a $35 DMV fee to trade out to the old plates plus $10 a year gets you legalized. I can't help to think what new scam is cooking behind this, because those....those....elected officials are ALWAYS looking out for our best interest - aren't they?

My question, would the car requesting black plates have to have been originally sold in California? Or are we going to see cars from all over the country be touted as "Black plate California survivors"? I'd love to get some black plates back on my '67 she's wearing blue and yellow now.

Some very valid points, and I'm sure more to come. I don't have any details other than what a friend found on www.fordfe.com. I titled my thread the same to keep consistent.

My 68 Road Runner has the orig black/yellows non-opped, and my 69 RR has the plates, but they fell off the DMV records years ago (I got it that way) ....So I'm hoping.

Can you get vanity plates with that old number and then run the old plates?

Nope... the DMV won't let you get vanity plates with 3 letters and then 3 numbers.... for just the reason you state.

For cars that originally had black plates, like the 69RR mentioned by leafgreen, if you can prove the plates were oncce on the vehicle, such as an old title or registration, you can apply to have them reinstated, as long as you have the plates AND the proof (one out of two won't do). Just fill out a statement of facts and mail it in with copies of your proof.

Now I'd never reccomend bending the law, but if the above option wouldn't work, and if one wanted the black or blue plates just because they look more appropriate, one could order "California for the arts" plates (the ones with the palm tree on them). Those happen to be 3 letter and 3 numbers. If you were lucky enough to get them during a good spot in the sequence (like my WEx xxx arts plate... just like a late 67 early 68 plate), you could order appropriate colored personalized novelty plates from out of state, and put those on your car...

Tried it. Doesn't work. And yes I had the plates and proof. Did the paperwork at a very friendly DMV (in Bishop--if you're ever going through there save all your DMV work to be done there). Lady there made sure I had all the paperwork filled out properly. In fact my car had only been registered out of state for literally a couple of weeks. I got bounced back by Sacramento a couple of months later.
