Red face In my own back yard

    OK,

At work yesterday one of the designers said he was up flying with a friend out of Mojave CA. and ask me (being the car guy) if I new of any REALLY BIG oval tracks around that area. I told him no and asked if he meant Willow Springs our local 2.5 mile road track about 30 miles away from Mojave. He said "No,no, we flew over that small track (Willow)... no these were BIG ovals"
I told him I didn't know of any big tracks and then thought about it for about 5 mins. before doing a Google Earth search of the general Mojave area……… and what did you think I found around California City………

These are all pictures at a relative elevation of about 16000 ft of:

Willow Springs International Racway - 2.5 mile road coarse

    Daytona International Speedway - 2.5 mile tri-oval

Hyundai Proving Grounds - 6.4 mile oval...

HONDA Proving Center - 7.5 mile oval...

Here is what little I found on the internet...

    Hyundai

Expected to be open for business in late 2004, the proving ground will be Hyundai's only such facility in North America. It will include a 6.4 mile oval track, vehicle dynamics area, a vehicle handling course, paved hill road, and several special surface roads in addition to the office complex.

Honda Proving Center of California (HPCC) is a test track used primarily for testing Honda and Acura automobiles. Motorcycles are also tested there. HPCC is located near Cantil, California, in Kern County. Security is tight, and pilots flying near the track have reported seeing cars immediately heading for cover as they got close to the facility.

HPCC has a 7.5 mile oval track, as well as a five-mile winding road course.

I find now the Hyundai facility has been open since 2004 and Honda since 1990...

Could I be the last car guy in California to know about this...

    Cheers,
