THE 220K '73RS is back on ebay

OOPS ........... It seems that the immaculate RS is back on ebay.

    http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/PORSC...QQcmdZViewItem

Just a hunch, but I'm guessing that the buyer found out what most of the RS enthusiasts already knew, that this RS is NOT a matching number car as purported by the seller. This is why this RS was unloaded by the Otis Chandler museum in the first place. After his discovery, I bet the buyer came down with an acute case of Buyers Remorse.

The seller says it is a matching number car because the official COA says that it is.

Gee whiz , where have we heard that line before. Maybe, just maybe , someone restamped a motor to match the "SUPPORTED AND VALIDATED" COA. This seller must be a friend of Kenny the Choo Choo.

Whew! Yeah, that's a real rat, isn't it? The only problem I have with that car is that I can't afford it. And by the way, the reason it was sold out of Otis Chandler's collection is that Otis Chandler died and all of his collection was sold.

    John,

Henry Fuchs (ironic) was the curator for the final seven years of the museum's existence and his wife was part time assistant. Prior to his tenure as curator, he was second in charge for almost a decade adding up to almost two decades of daily interaction with Otis Chandler.

I along with my wife and four sons have been a guest of Otis and Henry's at the museum at least a dozen times, most of which were private functions. On the two or three occasions that were not private functions, the museum was closed and my family and guests had free reign of the entire building and its collection which is quite and event for four
young boys (9, 7, 5 and 3). They liked the animals as much as the cars and bikes.

As a good friend of Henry Fuchs, an acquaintance of Otis as well as a customer of the museum ( I purchased a vehicle in 2004 from Otis), I was privy to and included in many Porsche related conversations and stories from the past.

One such conversation, just prior to the museum closing and Otis' death was the fact that they had learned that his RS #0866 was in fact a non-matching number car. Otis immediately decided that he know longer wanted the car and instructed Henry to sell and replace it with an "indisputable" example. Otis no longer felt that this car was in keeping with the other vehicles in his collection.

Very soon thereafter, Otis had Henry close the museum permanently as his health was declining. Word was out on the availability of #0866 and several offers were made to Henry Fuchs. Otis passed away before a deal was consummated and the RS was put in the auction line up

Neither Henry Fuchs or Otis Chandler EVER represented this car as a matching number car once they learned of its past. Both men had integrity, unlike this current scum bag that is blatantly misrepresenting the truth for a second time.

How does that saying go ......"and now you know the rest of the story"

    Chuck....

Interesting information. One of Otis's sons, Michael Chandler, is a neighbor and friend of mine here in Bend. He had arranged things for me to buy the car before the auction, but I had other things going on at the time and passed (to my regret). It was not represented to me as numbers matching and had a price that was appropriate.

Since you knew Otis so well, perhaps you know that Michael Chandler had a pretty distinquished racing career. He ran at Indy several times and had his career ended there with a crash at 200+ MPH when a component of the front suspension failed.

    Regards,

I've never had the pleasure of meeting Mike but if my memory serves, He was in a Dan Gurney chassis (Eagle) in '83 or '84 when he crashed. He had run there in a Penske chassis as well but I think it was the Eagle chassis that had the suspension failure.

Mikes career ended around the same time and same way that I my road racing career in Motorcycles ended (Brutally). I switched to cars in "86 and enjoyed a successful and relatively painless run until retirement last December.

I don't think Mike had much success at Indy but he did finish 4th at Riverside one year, though I can't remember the year.

I've often wondered why none of Otis' children never wanted any of his stuff (cars, bikes, animals, rugs, etc.) form the museum after his passing.

Well, I stayed in a Holiday Inn Express last night and I can tell just "looking" at the engine number stamp that's it's a fake.

I'm in one right now. However, it's in the middle of nowhere Texas so it doesn't do me any good.

You can see the type number is stamped into a depression in the casting created by a grinding wheel!

You guys are being too cynical and judgmental.

    He clearly states in is ebay listing that;

ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION ARE THE CORRECT MATCHING NUMBERS TO THIS CHASSIS AS SUPPORTED AND VALIDATED BY PORSCHE CERTIFICATE OF AUTHENTICITY. SEE PHOTO OF CERTIFICATE.

Come on guys .......... ease up a bit ......... geeeeeeez!!!

The fact that this car has a non-original engine would make it pretty close to my upper budget limit for a car -- if it were priced accordingly. It's contemptible to claim that a car has an original engine when it does not. And I would think it would be an act of criminal fraud.

This is one of the things I really like about the Internet, the fact that there is no place to hide.
