Thread: If I decide to sell my SWB S, how much should I ask for?

Question If I decide to sell my SWB S, how much should I ask for?

    Hi all

Due to immediate cash flow issues I may need to put my car up for sale.

It's a matching numbers Australian delivered factory RHD 1967-built 1968 model SWB S which has had significant and complete mechanical restoration work done including a complete engine and sportomatic gearbox rebuild by Phil Hearn, a well-known Aussie Porsche specialist.

There shouldn't be any need for further mechanical work and the car drives extremely well. The body still needs restoration however - there is some rust bubbles in the front right guard and at the bottom of the passenger door but the rest of the body is fine - the undercarriage has been totally fixed up - a full bare metal respray was my next step to bring it back to original Bahama Yellow.

Photos of the mechanical work, pre and post pictures of car, copies of original Kardex, Certificate of Authenticity and other documentation plus copies of recent receipts as well as a video of the car undergoing work can be found here:

It is an unusual combination of factory RHD SWB S and sportomatic.

If I decide to put it up for sale, how much do you think I should ask for? Should I even bother with eBay?

I may decide to keep it - just thinking about it at this stage. Thanks for the advice.

A RHD SWB 'S'? Put it up for sale on the DDK website for 50,000 Pounds and sell it tomorrow. The strong pound and RHD make this car very, very, very desirable over there. Sporto might hurt value, but I doubt it.

Thanks for the lead! I'd be happy with 25,000 pounds to be honest. It's likely to the first RHD S with sporto.

Umm - 11800316, an earlier S, was advertised in the UK for £38,995 for just over 14 months - not a single bite. The car was sold to a friend last week for around £22,000.

Pound strong - yes, British insane? Not yet

Which if it was original colours etc, it would be worth, un-cut door cards, original headliner etc. - but as I explained, with VAT and shipping costs, your £25k equals more like £32k.

It's possible - certainly not the earliest Sporto in RHD - but do bear in mind that in the '50s and '60s South Africa was a huge market for Porsche - much bigger than UK.

I'll do some digging around - but I have a feeling that there was a car earlier than 11800402 that was originally a Sporto - but now has a 901 fitted.

Eitherway - she's a precious and lovely car in wonderful condition - but the SWBs don't go for crazy money in the UK - yet.

    Hi Erwin,
Rather than wonder what your is worth and ask others here, why not just put it on EBay and set a reserve price that you are willing to sell it for. Let the open market decide if it's worth more. If no one hits your price, try it again with a lower reserve.
One thing I have found out by selling my last car on EBay is that if you post pictures of areas of the car that everyone knows get rusty, front pan, underside floors (from underneath a car lift, rear torsion tube, engine compartment, rockers, etc, and the car is clean, it will be much easier to sell the car to someone. Also, I included a few video links while driving my car around. Car sold easily and I had plenty of interested parties.
It still shocks me how many people are ready and willing to send thousands of dollars to a total stranger overseas without actually seeing a car in person first. But it happens all the time with EBay.

That's a great idea actually. Plenty of photos available here so photos are not an issue:

I may wait till this weekend before putting it on eBay I think.
