    Turn Signal/Headlight Dimmer Lever problem

I made a wiring error on my '73 911T (fog light switch) and it appears as though I damaged the lever. It functions perfectly with the exception that I can turn on the high beams by putting very slight forward pressure on the lever and then turn them off with very slight aft pressure. (The normal forward/high beam position works like it should.)

It's possible the switch was like this before, but I never noticed it. Does anyone else have this issue? Can it be repaired or do I need to look for a replacement? If so, any good sources?

    Thanks in advance.

    John,

I am confused, do you mean the thing on the steering column that controls the high beams and the turn signals or another switch that controls the fog lamps?

Assuming you mean the thing on the the steering column, this is a common point of failure. All of the headlamp current goes through this switch which is only marginally up to the task. As a result, it overheats and the plastic bits warp and then the switches stop working. There is a thread on Pelican that discussuses how to bend the contacts to get the switch working properly again. I tried that on my 911 with limited success and finally got a used switch from one of the dismantlers (DC Automotive, Parts Heaven, or EASY). Tey are also available new from the usual suspects.

To prevent this from happening again, I installed headlamp control relays to minimize the current the switch controls. You can get a relay kit from Marcus Sucro or Daniel Stern.

    Hope this helps.

    Harry,

Yes, the steering column control lever. I damaged it while installing a fog light switch. I'll lookup that post and will likely just replace the lever. The relay is a great idea. I'll do that too.

    Thanks for your help.
