    BaT Description:

This 1970 Porsche 911E is a European-market sunroof coupe that was imported to the US from Germany in 1982, and it previously sold in March 2017 on BaT before it was acquired by the selling dealer in 2020. The car is finished in black over black vinyl upholstery, and power comes from a 2.2-liter flat-six paired with a five-speed manual transaxle. Modifications include H4 headlights, a 911S-style front spoiler, and RS-style door cards. The left window regulator and weatherstripping were replaced during prior ownership in 2020. This 911E coupe is now offered at no reserve with a tool roll, recent service records, and a transferable British Columbia registration.

Delivered from the factory in Tangerine, the car was refinished in blue before it was repainted in its current black during previous ownership. A steel 911S-style front spoiler is fitted along with a Durant-look side mirror, H4 headlights with relays, and a pair of reproduction driving lights that are presently inoperable. Cracks and chips are noted on all body panels, there is rust present in the windshield corners and rear valance, there is a hole in the left passenger area, the high-beams and rear side marker lights are inoperable, loose wiring is noted in the front trunk, and the left door sags and does not align with the latch.

15″ Fuchs wheels feature colored Porsche-crest center caps and are mounted with 2017 date-coded Continental Pure Contact tires. Torsion bars replaced factory self-adjusting front struts during previous ownership, and a plate has been welded over the front control arm bolts. The suspension bushings, CV boots, and brake components were replaced by Luftech Motorsport of North Vancouver, British Columbia in July 2017. The steering wheel is noted as off-center by the selling dealer.

The cabin features Cerullo front sport seats trimmed in black vinyl, aftermarket seat belts, salt-and-pepper square-weave carpets, and Coco floor mats. RS-style door panels were fitted during previous ownership, and a Becker Mexico AM/FM/Cassette stereo is fitted in the dashboard. The leather-wrapped four-spoke steering wheel frames a central 8k-rpm tachometer, a 150-mph speedometer, an analog clock, and supplemental instrumentation in a pair of combination housings. The five-digit odometer shows 350 miles, and total mileage is unknown.

The 2.2-liter 911/01 flat-six is equipped with mechanical fuel injection and was factory rated at 155 horsepower and 141 lb-ft of torque. The engine is said to have been rebuilt by Otto’s European Coach Werks of Santa Monica, California in the early 2000s, and is fitted with pressure-fed chain tensioners. A valve adjustment and engine service were performed by Luftech Motorsport in July 2017. Oil leaks are noted by the selling dealer.

Power is sent to the rear wheels via a Type 901 five-speed manual transaxle, which the selling dealer notes will grind when going into first gear and also leaks. Corrosion is noted in the driver-side of the battery box and gas tank longitudinal. A PPI report written by the selling dealer can be seen in the gallery.

    - Finished in Rare and Desirable Color of Gemini Blue Metallic over Black Leatherette
    - Retains Matching-Numbers Engine per Porsche COA
    - The Final Long-Hood Model with Mechanical Fuel Injection
    - Equipped with Innovative Sportomatic Transmission
    - Accompanied by Owner’s Manual, Jack, and Certificate of Authenticity
    - Please note that this vehicle is titled 1971

Built for the 1973 model year, this 911 E is finished in Gemini Blue Metallic over black leatherette interior. Well equipped from the factory, optional equipment included “S” instrumentation, forged alloy wheels, front and rear stabilizer bars, wheel well moldings, Becker Europa radio, and tinted glass. This attractive 911 has also been fitted with dealer-installed air-conditioning as well as sporty S brakes and front air dam. A previous owner carried out an engine rebuild, while under current ownership, the 911 has received a glass-out repaint, as well as a rebuild of the ultra-rare Sportomatic transmission. Copies of service and repair orders included with the sale indicate the 911 was serviced regularly under three previous owners in South Dakota. The consignor purchased the 911 E in 2008 with the intention of fixing a few cosmetics and adding the car to his stable of vintage Porsche automobiles.

This wonderful 911 E presents beautifully in Gemini Blue and is supplied with its owner’s manual, jack, spare tire, restoration and service invoices, and Porsche Certificate of Authenticity. Rare, desirable, and commonly regarded as the best of the 2.4-liter models for road use, this 911 E stands as a very desirable example coming from a fastidious home.

    Auction Description:

    - One of just 935 911 E Targa examples produced for the model year
    - Rare and attractive, factory-correct Gemini Blue Metallic over cream leatherette
    - Numbers-matching 2.2-liter flat-six cylinder engine; correct-type five-speed manual transaxle
    - Delivered new to the United States in November 1970
    - Fully restored between 2005 and 2020; just 104 miles indicated since completion at time of cataloguing

This particular 1971 911 E 2.2 Targa is one of just 935 examples produced for the model year, and it is clad in its factory-correct and attractive color combination of Gemini Blue Metallic over cream leatherette. Delivered to the US market in late November 1970, this fully restored and eminently presentable 911 E was acquired by the previous owner—himself a professional Porsche specialist and master upholsterer—from a Pennsylvania dealer in 2005. Having just four owners of record, he purchased the car with the singular intent to restore it; it took the past sixteen years to do just that, with the assistance of various specialist shops in Southern California.

From 2005 until 2020, the car’s cosmetic and mechanical restoration was undertaken (in stages) by the noted experts at CPR Classic Restoration of Fallbrook, California. Accompanying invoices show that the car’s numbers-matching 2.2.-liter engine received a complete teardown and subsequent rebuild, and every major system was completely refreshed with new parts. In all, invoices on file indicate several hundred line items were addressed in order to bring this 911 E back to roadgoing brilliance.

The interior work was executed by the previous owner’s hand and presents impeccably; the correct-type sport seats are finished in a polychrome blue pepita and cream leatherette which perfectly compliments the factory-spec carpeting and door cards. A Becker Europa radio is fitted into the dashboard. The car presently sits on a set of correct and restored Fuchs wheels clad in fresh period-style Pirelli P6000 tires, and a pair of external Cibie fog lights have been added—a tasteful addition which evokes a period road rallying aesthetic.

This attractive, fully restored and eminently presentable 911 E 2.2 Targa is now accompanied by an incomplete tool kit, jack, and a suite of service invoices recording the car’s sixteen-year restoration by CPR Classic Restoration.

And that ain't no gemini blue paint anymore. It looks more like a medium blue metallic. I have to admit though, I like the current color more than the original gemini blue.

Was thinking the same thing, this ain't gemini. But it's a nice $140k garage queen no matter what, especially in combination with the cream interior, never seen that before...

Personally, I prefer gemini but I'm totally biased as ex-owner of a 73.5T in that color.
Currently in between Porsches. Sold my 73.5T Targa, now suffering from serious withdrawal symptoms. Attending Rennsport Reunion VI didn't really help getting over it.

Concourse restored with no expense spared! This is the perfect 1971 911E with hefty
documentation. It was recently judged at 292.3 out of 300 at the Concourse De Elegance. 3 Inches
of paperwork included with the sale. Please take a moment to go through the gallery and view the test
drive video. Overall a very sorted Porsche 911.

    Interior:

The interior looks like it came off the production line, Carpets are in perfect condition, all dash
components work as they should. Once again please take a
moment to go through the gallery below. Seat bolsters are very comfortable, radio was sent to
Germany for restoration and works as it should, Air works as it should and blows cold. The rear seats
are in excellent condition, all belt straps are like new with no wear. Door cards have no
imperfections, and all seals are new. Doors close evenly. All glass is very nice.

    Exterior:

The metallic Gold paint is mesmerizing. In bright light, it pops and glows, in shadows it is very rich
and dark gold. The paint is correct and I would easily say a 9.5-9.7 out of 10. Engine bay looks just
as good as the exterior as well. The trunk is very detailed and the tool kit and euro headlight bezels are
included in the sale. Under the trunk mat, you will find a spare and jack. All brightwork is in excellent
condition with no pitting. The chrome on the bumpers is in excellent condition. Tires have 95%
tread on them. Wheels have no rash or blemishes. Truly has a stunning exterior.

    Drivetrain:

Runs and drives great, The mechanical fuel injection works perfectly! The 2.2L is very strong,
with excellent oil pressure. The 5-speed transmission shifts excellent with no pop out. No driveline noise
or whine. The clutch is easy with no shuddering. It truly is a joy to drive. Please take a moment to view
the test drive video. The suspension is perfect, firm yet soft enough to enjoy on long trips. (If you dare)

The underbelly of this 911E is the same as the top, Immaculate!

Doug, it is possible the article was written well before publication, and decision of owner to sell might be completely separate from PCA to publish. Or not ... I seem to recall a lot of cars that were covered in magazines, were often available for sale not too long afterwards.

Knowing the lead time for many magazines like that, I think it is quite possible that it was not for sale when the article was written. Or while the sale was planned, perhaps the Panorama people weren't told...
