Thread: 911T Cars for Sale

    FS: @RM | Sotheby's Scottsdale - '71 911T Targa

    RM | Sotheby's Scottsdale, Arizona, January 17-18, 2019

    VIN: 9111111568
    Engine: 6116280
    Trans: -
Color: Light Yellow (Originally Light Ivory?)/Black Leatherette
    Mileage: 68,019 (indicated)
Auction Estimate: US$100,000 - $125,000 (Offered without Reserve)

    Auction Description:

    - Original matching-numbers engine
    - Complete with owner’s manuals and tool kit
    - Original interior with recently repainted exterior
    - Less than 68,000 miles recorded, believed original

This example, one of those last carbureted 911s, was finished in January 1971 with a host of options such as comfort equipment, Blaupunkt radio, pressure cast Fuchs wheels, all around tinted glass, and Dunlop tires. Delivered to the U.S., this 911 T Targa was one of just a few hundred 911 Ts built to U.S.-specification that year.

In very pleasing condition throughout, this 911 T has been well prepared for its next half century. All heater components were repaired or replaced in 2013, with a new fuel pump and master cylinder following in 2014. The removal of the engine in 2015, in preparation for the replacement of new seals, allowed for a careful detailing of the engine compartment. Cosmetically the Targa was repainted in June 2018, and the removable top was restored the following August. Five new Pirelli tires were fitted to the restored 15-in. wheels to complete the package.

Service records accompany the Porsche, attesting to the originality of the mileage. With low original mileage, a rare specification, and still equipped with its matching-numbers engine, this ‘long-hood’ 911 ticks all the boxes.

    Seller's ad:
1973 Porsche 911T Chassis #9113101667, matching to the COA Engine #6133291, five speed, CIS fuel injection, factory electric sun roof, Fuchs forged 6J x 15 alloy wheels including the spare, S Trim. Original California blue license plates. 69,891 miles on the odometer. It has rolled over once. Dealer installed air conditioning.

Currently in 30-year, garage kept ownership by the 4th owner in a line of four exceptional caretakers. Purchased by this owner in February 1989 with 136,952 miles. This car has always been in Northern California since it was purchased new by the first owner from Martin Johnson Porsche Audi in Oakland, California.

Fully documented maintenance history performed by marque experts throughout its life. Complete original owners' manual and maintenance book with jack and original tool kit come with the car.

This car has been sympathetically and correctly maintained and restored as needs required.

In 1986 the engine was professionally rebuilt at 135,942 miles by a marque expert. The engine enhancements consist of going from points to a pointless ignition system, a late style alternator with internal voltage regulator and a Permatune engine module. I believe all other mechanicals are factory correct.

Also, at that time the car had a full window/engine out respray from its original Paint Code 414 Olive to DuPont Paint Code L8621 Rock Moss Green (Jaguar British Racing Green). While the paint was expertly applied and still shines brilliantly, there are some dings and scratches from over 35 years of enjoyment and use. It is worn in some spots due to polishing with the buffer. There does not appear to be any filler, and the paint is not bubbling. There is some cracking on the engine lid, but it is not burnt nor does it detract from the overall appearance of the car. The body is in very good shape with the exceptions of the dings and dents mentioned. The car was garaged for its entirety with the 4th owner.

The last major engine out service was done in 2005 at 157,128 miles. The last professional service was done in 2011 at 164,539 miles. The oil and filter was changed once after that and changed again in June 2017 at about 169,300 miles. I drove the car to and from Morgan Hill to the 2018 Werks Reunion in Monterey with no issues. I continue to start and drive the car on a semi weekly basis.

There is no rust anywhere on the car. The floors, sills, wheel arches and panels are in excellent shape with the exception of a couple of dings from over 35 years of use since the respray (See photos for examples).

Period and model correct black vinyl seats have replaced the original leatherette beige, houndstooth check fabric inlay seats which had been removed and replaced with aftermarket seats prior to our ownership. The carpets were replaced during our ownership with period correct gray square weave replacements and professionally installed by local experts. The headliner and sun visors are factory original.

The exterior factory tinted glass is all original and clear. The dash is crack and blemish free and still has the original factory speaker. The gauges are clear and operable with the exception of the clock. The sun roof opens and closes smoothly and is water tight. The car starts, runs and shifts like new. The brakes and steering are excellent. The radio is non original and dates from the 80's. This car was always respected by my father, is reliable, still keeps up with modern traffic, and is as enjoyable now to drive as it was when new.

I have all maintenance records in a binder. The owners manual has stampings of services performed from when the first owner had the car and I have all the receipts for work done to the car from 1975 (starting with the second owner) through my family's ownership. All four owners kept all their records including the California DMV renewal and registration docs!

    BaT Description:

This 1973 Porsche 911T was built in August 1972 and originally owned by a doctor in California. The car was eventually relocated to Canada and remained in storage for several years before being purchased by the seller in 2015. A 2.4-liter flat-six from a 1972 model was installed by a previous owner has been rebuilt by the seller with 85mm JE pistons, new crank and rod bearings, head studs, clutch, and much more as detailed below. The MFI pump and 5-speed manual transaxle were also rebuilt and a new clutch was installed. The body was modified with wider rear fender flares and aftermarket bumpers by a previous owner, and the interior was refreshed by the seller. Service records for the work done over the last three years are included along with a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, and this 911T is now being offered with a clean Ontario registration the seller’s name.

Body and paint work have included modifying the rear fenders, installing aftermarket front and rear bumpers, adding a sunroof, and repainting the car in its original color. The modifications and repaint were performed under previous ownership, with the history and timing of the work unknown. The seller has replaced the chrome power antenna and headlight rings, and he notes that the sunroof is not working.

The brake calipers were rebuilt front and rear within the last three years. The Fuchs wheels have been stripped and finished with a clear coat, and are currently fitted with Toyo tires.

The interior was refurbished by the seller with new leather upholstery on the seats and door panels, the top dash was recovered, and the bottom dash plates and radio were replaced. 65k miles are shown on the odometer, and the seller estimates he has added about 400 kilometers during his ownership.

A 1972 2.4-liter flat-six (*6121152*) was installed by a previous owner and has been rebuilt under the seller’s ownership. Work and parts included the following:

    • JE 85mm pistons
    • Bottom-end engine castings re-machined and bore drilled
    • New head studs, piston rings, valves, bronze valve guides, rated springs, parkerized camshafts, chain housing, hydraulic tensioners, cam oil feed lines, rocker arms, rocker shafts, rocker shaft seals, rocker adjusters, chain rails, flow intake, and rods
    • New crank, rod, and intermediate shaft bearings installed
    • Fan belt and blower motor replaced
    • Pulley and cover replaced
    • Oil tank, lines, and sending unit replaced
    • MFI pump rebuilt
    • MFI pump belt, gaskets, oil line, and fuel lines replaced
    • Heater duct and vacuum hoses replaced
    • Cab motor mounts replaced
    • New aluminum clutch installed
    • New clutch cable and clutch bolts installed
    • Bushing shift coupler, rod, bushing cup on shifter, and accelerator rod bushing replaced
    • Main Wire harness removed and refurbished
    • Power cable to starter and ground cables replaced
    • New ignition rotor/no-rev limiter, ignition points, spark plugs, and alternator pulley installed
    • Distributor rebuilt, distributor cap replaced

The 5-speed manual transmission has also been rebuilt and is said to be original. The underside was treated with rustproofing when the engine and transmission were out of the car, and a cross over pipe, bung fitting exhaust, and muffler have been installed. A Porsche Certificate of Authenticity confirms the build date, colors, and original equipment. Receipts and invoices from 2015 to the present document the parts used during the build process and service since the project was completed.
