    Auction Description:

Now available for auction is this 1973 Porsche 911 T Targa Sportomatic presented in Gold Metallic over a black leatherette interior. In 1973, the 911 T was offered in the United States as the first 911 to be equipped with Bosch CIS fuel injection. Marking the final iteration of the long hood 911 Targa, this 1973 example is said to remain in outstanding condition for its age. Highlighting some noteworthy recent service items including a full engine rebuild performed at a cost of over $21k, this number’s matching 911 Targa is ready to begin its journey with a new owner.

The Gold Metallic finish is said to be in very nice condition with only minor road-going wear. A collection of detailed images is provided in the photo gallery. This Targa is characterized by its sought-after long hood configuration, distinctive stainless-steel roll hoop and wraparound rear dome windshield. Exterior details include an aftermarket front bumper and factory optioned chrome fender strips, fog lights and tinted glass. This 911 rides on factory Fuchs alloy wheels which are currently dressed in Pirelli tires from 2016.

The black leatherette interior is stated to be in great shape with all gauges and accessories in working order including the air conditioning system. Factory options include an engine compartment light, Koni shocks and stabilizer bars. An aftermarket Pioneer head unit has been installed with rear shelf speakers.

This 911 carries its original air-cooled 2.4 L flat-six engine featuring a Bosch CIS fuel injection system which was debuted in 1973 exclusively for the United States T model. With a higher output than its European-market counterparts, this 911 T is capable of sending 140 HP to the rear wheels by way of a number’s matching 4-speed Sportomatic transmission. Launched in 1967, the Sportomatic transmission was essentially a semi-automatic 4-speed transmission which allowed manual operation but clutch-less shifting. It proved to be popular choice with nearly a quarter of all U.S. sold 911’s equipped as Sportomatics.

The brakes were redone within the last few years and the engine was fully rebuilt in 2018 by German Auto Center at a cost of over $21k. A record detailing all of the work performed during this time is provided in the photo gallery. Factory performance options include premium Koni shocks as well as front and rear stabilizer bars. The seller indicates a slight exhaust leak and some minor grinding when shifting into second gear. This Targa is stated to be in otherwise excellent driving condition, just waiting to be enjoyed.

The sale of this 911 will include one master key, one lock key, the original tools and owner’s manual, service records, a spare tire and Porsche Certificate of Authenticity.

    Dealer Description:

    - Light Yellow Over Black
    - 5-Speed Manual
    - 911S “Appearance Group”
    - Front Fog Lights
    - Sport Seats
    - In Possession of Original Owner for Nearly 40 Years

This Porsche 911T was produced in February 1971 and is finished in its original color of Light Yellow and presents in very solid driver condition. The car shows well thanks to a respray in the original color as well as a host of other reconditioning jobs but has never been completely restored. Sold new at Art Bunker Audi/Porsche in Overland Park, Kansas, the car remained under the care of the original owner until 2009. Thanks to this fastidious owner, the car still retains its original service booklet, delivery invoice, and a partially complete original tool roll. On the exterior, this car displays a few unique features that separate it from other 911Ts- the first of which are the factory optional dual fog lights in front. A pair of round lights affixed to the front grilles give an almost rally car look to this 911 and are a relatively uncommon option from the era. Additionally, a set of Mahle “Gas Burner” wheels were specified on this example as opposed to the Fuchs 5-spokes you typically see. The “Appearance Group” option upgrades the exterior with a number of upgrades that were otherwise reserved for the 911S- gold rear badging, extended rocker panels and elegantly integrated rubber moldings over the chrome bumpers, all help to tie the car together.

Like the exterior of the car, the interior is largely original- finished in black with a great set of black and yellow Coco Mats on the floor. The original “Comfort” style seats have been replaced by a beautiful set of the more heavily bolstered sport seats of the era which provide much better support in the twisties and just look great in the cabin. One feature that truly sets this car apart from almost any other 911 of the era is that not only does it have factory air conditioning, but it actually blows cold. Anybody who has driven a 911 of this era with factory A/C can tell you that even when in good order, calling the air coming out of the vents “cool” is an overstatement- but this car does truly deliver in the cold air department, making it a fantastic car for touring or road rallies.

The 2.2-liter flat-6 is the original unit for this car but has been treated to a number of upgrades over the years to both improve reliability and the driving experience. In the 1990s, the motor was treated to a full rebuild that benefited from the addition of later Carrera timing chain tensioners, as well as a set of higher compression 911S pistons. The Zenith 3-choke carburetors were replaced by a set of Webers and the always-important SSI heat exchangers were installed. In 1971, the standard gearbox on a US market 911T was a 4-speed but a 5-speed like that found in the 911E and 911S was an option. This example came from the factory with that desirable 5-speed which was also overhauled while the engine was out and still shifts smoothly today. The car runs and drives very nicely- the front end isn’t quite as tight as you would find on a fully set up car, but replacing some bushings would likely do the car many favors. Overall, this is a really wonderful 911 to drive that provides smooth power throughout the rev range.

This 911T can be summed up by simply saying it is a fantastic driver’s car and the perfect companion for road trips, rallies, or touring. With much of the major mechanical reconditioning already completed, this car is ready to get in and enjoy. When that is combined with such long-term single ownership and much of the original documentation, this 911T is a truly unique example.

This is a compelling car for $89k. Fantastic color!

I would think it would easily sell for more. What am I missing?

Does someone (a business) provide a service to facilitate purchasing BAT cars for overseas buyers? Inspections, transport, shipping etc.?
A lot of these cars simply aren't accerssible to folks like myself outside of the USA. However, when I see some of the prices on BAT, they seem reasonable compared to what I'd pay for a local car (that's probably been imported from USA anyway).

Skat004, the simple answer is NO. BAT are simply an auto auction platform and any 'buyer' must arrange their own level of due diligence. That aside there are many Members here who have sold cars on BAT and most are up front and honest about their cars and most if not all would allow a PPI to be performed (at buyers cost of course) and I would NOT consider bidding on a vehicle on BAT if the 'seller' was not allowing a PPI to be performed by a prospective purchaser (bidder).
The 'trap of the BAT' is that you only have 7 -10 days to get an inspection done however many of us here also follow BAT and you could always try to reach out via ESR if any members have knowledge of a particular 911 you may be interested in or be able to help direct you to someone in the ZIP Code that the car is being sold in that could have a squizz at the car.
Overseas Transport ,,,, BAT don't give a damn and is something you must work out for yourself but there are are a couple of good crowds that I have used in the past shipping to New Zealand.
Its a challenge but not an impossible one and wish you all the very best on your goal.

If I were looking to use an independent person to act on my behalf, I would approach some of the most prolific sellers on BaT and ask. I suspect its done all the time. I have no idea what the commission rate would be, but why not have an expert in your camp? You would also then have someone familiar with the exporting of said vehicle. At least then you'd have a better chance of getting what you really want with few surprises within a negotiated range and cost structure.
