    Bahama Yellow or Gulf Blue?

OK, I know that this isn't up there with the search for the meaning of life, but I'm having a hard time deciding on the color to paint my '67 911. It was in pretty good shape, but I got a wild hair to add some 911R type components and I'm ending up repainting the car (the "might as well" thing).

It was originally Bahama Yellow, which I really like, but it's getting to be a pretty good performing hot rod and I have always really liked the Gulf Racing color scheme - sky blue with orange accents.

Here's what it looks like now (or did before it was apart):

And here's what it looks like in Gulf Racing colors (thanks to Phil Lack!):

Phil asked this board the same question and his car looks fantastic. I asked him if he minded if I used his car for "inspiration" and he said to go for it. If my car was originally any other color but Bahama Yellow I would definitely use the Gulf Racing colors. But Bahama Yellow....

Anyway, I've always wanted to try the poll function here so go ahead and vote for the color you prefer.

    Thanks,

My '69 is Bahama Yellow, the original color. I had it repainted during restoration, same color. I hated it at first but it's growing on me and I get compliments on it all the time. I kept it that color for the sake of keeping it original, which the car generally is. I do envy people who have cars that are less original like a hot rod. You can customize to your hearts content and have no guilt about it not being original. If your car is a hot rod and has been modified then go that route. Paint it what ever color tickles your fancy. The Gulf colors are really cool in my humble opinion. Your car looks great. Love the rally lights.

Was it tough flipping your wipers the other way? Is that a factory roll bar?

Yes...Gulf Blue is a bitchen color...

So is Bahama Yellow - and it's a lot more unique.
I'd be inclined to paint it Bahama Yellow, and put properly-scaled, solid white meatballs (number circles) on it. Fill in all the misc trim holes, put a center-fill gas cap on the hood...and I think you'll have a real looker on your hands. It would be a car people don't see very often - and it would look so "period" it wouldn't be funny...

    I vote for Bahama Yellow...

Good luck - you'll be fine whatever direction you take...

John, I vote for bahama yellow ....
make it your own by incorporating something like the audette family crest colors ..?
    http://www.houseofnames.com/xq/asp.f...mily-crest.htm

you have yellow already there, plus blue and white/cream ....
stripe in blue and cream or white .... lost of options ...

swooshes ... i know i saw an rs or st replica with a blue swoosh sort of color on the side ....

just something to think about ... its a pretty fab car right now ... won't need much ...

    911R Inspired Rally Car

Thanks for everyone who has participated in the poll and taken the time to send their thoughts. A couple of folks have asked what exactly is being done to the car and I thought I would take a moment and summarize it here for those who might be interested:

    o Engine
    - Original engine rebuilt to 2.7 (RS p/c's, 930 cams, 2.7 crank)
    - PMO's
    - Monte muffler

    o Transmission
    - Special built 901 5-speed with short gears & limited slip

    o Suspension
    - Larger torsion bars and sway bars
    - Adjustable spring plates
    - Elephant Racing polybronze bearings front & rear
    - Aligned & corner-balanced

    o Brakes
    - Carrera brakes in the front with vented rotors. A-arms and Koni struts (with Koni inserts) from a '73 911S were installed in order to accommodate the larger calipers.
    - Carrera brakes in the rear with vented rotors - used the great adapter kit made by Michael Moran of the Registry.

    o Lights
    - H-1 headlights (have a set of Marchal Amplilux headlights and may install those at some point).
    - Hood mounted Cibies
    - Through-the-grill driving lights
    - 911R rear light assemblies

    o Body
    - Aluminum engine lid with wiper
    - Fiberglass front & rear bumpers
    - Fiberglass fenders

    o Interior
    - Carpets, dash, door panels and headliner done by Autos International
    - Replica Scheel R2's from by Vintage Seats
    - Custom made roll bar with head restraints and back brace for driver seat
    - 5-point harnesses
    - Original instruments rebuilt by Palo Alto Speedo
    - Lexan rear window
    - Lexan louvered R-type quarter windows

    o Wheels & Tires - Street & Rally
    - Original NOS 911R 7x15's in rear with Yokohama AVS ES100 225/50 street tires
    - Deep six's (with hearts) 6x15's in front with Yoko 205/55's

    o Wheels & Tires - Track
    - 7x15 Fuchs with Yokohama AO32R 225/50 semi-racing tires front & rear

    o Other
    - Center-fill fuel tank
    - Side-mount oil tank from '72 (maybe)
    - P-O-R-S-C-H-E side script
    - P-O-R-S-C-H-E decal on engine lid
    - Rubber hold-downs for hood & engine lid

And I'm pretty sure it's going to be Bahama Yellow. I'll post pictures here when it's done.

The first event is the Texas Hill Country 1000 Mile Rally in November which I will be driving with my son.

    Cheers,

    John,

Personally, I think Bahama color one of the better vintage colors. IMHO, it would actually be a mistake to change the color. But then I"m a purist.

    Looks like a nice car!

    Progress Report

In case anyone is interested, I have made some decisions about my '67 SWB. I had entertained thoughts about doing a 911R inpired rally car with it, but after we took it apart and removed the three layers of Bamana Yello paint, we discovered an almost perfect tub, with very little rust and no collision damage.

I can't bring myself to cut into a great tub. So I'm taking the car back to bone-stock (except for the mechanicals ). I have a lot of 911R bits and pieces and I'm going to use them to build the 911R inspired car using a 912 tub that I have (that a friend gave me).

Some here may remember I had a '73 911S 2.7 that I called the Wolf because it looked pretty tame on the outside but was a good performer. Well, this car is Wolf #2. It really is a wolf in sheep's clothing - pretty rowdy for an old guy like me.

The Sheep: all original panels, original color, original numbers matching engiine (well, built up a bit , original numbers matching transmission -- and original California black plate.

The Wolf: engine built to 2.7, PMO's, Carrera brakes, upgraded & tuned suspension, etc.

I'll post pictures of the progress in a few days.

    Cheers,
