Early '72S had fiberglass bumpers as stock???

I was chatting with a friend in the UK and he directed me to the Autofarm site. I was checking out some listings when I saw something odd. They state in this listing, that the car "even retains its original glassfibre front spoiler bumper, as on all early chassis number '72 model 911S until Porsche had finalized the steel pressing early in 1972."

The VIN (9112300356) seems a little high to call it an "early" 72S. I thought AutoFarm was very knowledgeable on early 911s, so what's the story here? Uninformed copywriter? Probable. New 911 trivia? doubtful.

I recall reading this in some forum discussion (had to be here or Pelican) a while back as well. I do not remember the exact details, but it was stated that the factory did use fiberglass initially for this spoiler, then shifted over to steel.
I will try to search and find a reference. As an aside, the FG spoiles have been widely available in the aftermarket for decades and thousands have been fitted to early cars over the years. How would one ever tell that a particular FG spoiler was from Porsche??

you can't go by vin #. you need to use the production number to determine the build order...near knee pads and underneath dash pad.

Yes, the early 72's did have a glass front spoiler. I had a early 72S and just assumed it was an aftermarket spoiler that was on it. Then our good friend Eric told me that the early ones did in fact come with glass. I believe the cutoff was somewhere in the 300's.

The changeover occurred on serial #385 for coupes, and #231 for Targa's.

So the Autofarm car would have the fiberglass (fibreglass? glassfibre?) bumper.

So,.... $90K+ for that car eh? Guess I should get out the buffer for mine, and put some armor all on the tires!

Wow. I never knew that. You learn something every day. Thanks for the info.

How's the quality of those fiberglass parts? How much do the after market fiberglass bumpers differ from the Porsche ones?

I come from another post, sorry for the resurrection but I am not clear. The fiber spoilers were only "mounted" on the early '72 911S? What figure do you understand early? 500 vehicles? 200?

The changeover occurred on serial #385 for coupes, and #231 for Targa's, so around 600 cars
