VIN numbers and dash rail numbers

    Hello all.

Please could someone help decipher these?

I have a 1969 E body which has the VIN defaced and illegible..but the body build number in the dash is intact...

I know these are closely correlated..but not exactly how.

I need to find the VIN to trace the car's origins and check its not stolen..

    Kind regards
    David

There is no direct relationship between the production number & the VIN for lwb models (for earlier swb models the number was the same as the VIN) - in other words you can't determine the VIN (or even whether the car is a T E or S variant)from the production number.

All you can determine is whether it is a Coupe or Targa & what the model year was - a '69 coupe's productiojn number will be in the format:

    109XXXX

    '1' is for 911
'0' is for coupe (1 would be for Targa; and I think a 2 is for Karmann coupe)
    '9' is for '69 ('0' for '70, etc)
'XXXX' is a consecutive # for the shells being produced.

    Thanks, Andy.

    Very helpful..

I do know that it MAY be possible..tho' I do not know exactly how or whether it comes from some factory or importer's records..rather than by "processing" the body number itself....

    I will ask PUK..(AFN)....its a RHD car..

    Kind regards
    David

Only Porsche themselves will know the relationship between the 2 sets of numbers.

If you quote both numbers for a specific car they will tell you if they match or not but if you only have one of these numbers they will not divulge the other one.
