    Seat re-finish: retro or luxury?

I'm having my '72 S restored and would like your opinion on seat finishes.

The car's original colour combination was Emerald/Viper Green with a black interior. It was delivered with sport seats in all black vinyl. Generally, the car will be restored to delivery specification. One exception I'm considering is the seat finish. Because I don't think vinyl would be very comfortable on a hot day, I'm tending towards having the center section done in cord.

How should I do the sides? If I choose vinyl, it will at least be partly like the originals and will retain the 70's feel. On the other hand, if I'm breaking from the original spec anyway, why not go all the way and choose leather which is a little more luxurious and will pick up a patina more easily?

What would you do in my shoes?

    1. Black vinyl with center section in cord. Retro feel with a little less sweat.

    2. Black leather with center section in cord. Add a touch of luxury while you're at it.

    3. Black vinyl all the way. It isn't a passion unless you have to suffer for it.

    4. Other option of your choice.

By the way, am I right in understanding that it was possible to order leather (or leather/cord) seats in 1972 without ordering a full leather interior (dash, etc.) as well? If not, then leather would have to be out, as I would like to stick to legitimate options, even if I don't stay with the delivery spec...

    Thanks for your input!

Might as well go leather with cord or houndstooth. The right 72 vinyl is a beyotch to find.

    Wink All Vinyl....

Yes it's so rare to find an original pair of Recaro in Vinyl, with that specific pattern in the center.

There was an original Vinyl pair for sale at the Ventura show (earlier ones without headrests), and they had that vinyl patina which made them so special....

In the end it comes down to Patina I think. If you can find a pair with the original patinated vinyl center piece that is still usable, than don't hesitate! If you need new material, than probably safer to go cord or houndstooth.

+1 all vinyl. Keep original as possible, especially a sought after 72'S coupe. Vinyl will be hot for a few minutes, then its fine.

Oops, forgot to mention that the seats are not original to the car. So no chance of saving the original vinyl patina...

They are correct 1972 seats but will need to be re-done in any case.

    Does this change things?

    cover materials

I would go with perforated leather at the sides and corduroy for the centers, comfort all the way.
