    Wink Inept Question #1

Doin my part to avoid random attacks of anger

What was the first year for the A pillar VIN tag on US 911s? The thought struck me last eve. Did SWBs have this or was 69 the first year?

I think it is an excellent question and one I would like to know the answer to myself. Of course we know that pilliar id was only on US cars but what year did it start? Very first cars coming into US in 1965 I believe the door jam sticker started in 69 for US cars. No reference in Dr. Johnson book to vin id's...

I, too, was always under the impression that the A-pillar VIN plate was introduced in '69 on US models.

Bruce Anderson states the same in the Performance Handbook.

Thanks guys. I'm sure I've read that tidbit but, for some reason it didn't stick to a brain cell. Either that or I dislodged it with a previous glass of Cab or Merlot or Pinot or Zin....You get the idea

My now departed '67 912 only had the two tags in the trunk. Nothing on the A pillar. I remember because when I went to registerit, the young gal at the DMV was very perplexed where to find the 2 (matching) VIN numbers for her certification. She was surprised to not see one on the A Pillar.

    A pillar VIN tag

It seems the A pillar tag started on the 69 cars at January 1969 production, probably to coincide with 1969 calender year DOT requirements. I had a customer 1969 911 E, # 35 or so, that did not have the A pillar tag. It was early enough that it had been built in calender year 1968, hence it wasn't yet required.
