Car stuff to do/see in Chicago 13 and 14 Oct -

    hi guys

i'm on a work trip in the usa for the next 2 weeks and have a free weekend in chicago 13/14 oct.

is anyone aware of any historic/vintage (esp. racing) car events at that time?

any other car-ish suggestions would also be welcomed.
    Cheers, Ryan

    Hi Ryan,

Welcome to the Midwest. Most of our fun car events are over with by this time of the season. I looked at the Chicago PCA site and several of the area tracks and there is really nothing going on that weekend that I know of.

Another suggestion would be to post the same question on Pelican, on the regional board as well as the main 911 board. There maybe something happening that I am not aware of.

Hey, if you are going to still be in the States toward the end of the month you might want to consider a trip down to Daytona, Florida. There is a modest Porsche gathering there you might be interested in.

If you want to a ride down there in a rather old 911 I may be able to arrange that too.

Ditto what Brian said... Nothing vintage/racing going on that weekend unless you call me excersizing my longhoods a car event. Well, it is an event to me since I really love driving early 911s.

Try the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry you can walk through the U-505 and get a real feeling for "Das Boot."

Then have a Manhattan and dinner at Gibson's one of the best steak houses in the country. That's what I do when I'm in Chicago on business...

Well, perhaps that weekend rather than come to Chicago...might need to change plans and head to Ohio.

VSCDA is running at Mid-Ohio...great track and should be plenty of cars.

About a 6 hours drive from Chicago...

Other than that, some of the cool car shops are most likely closed on the weekend...and others can chime in...

Midwest Eurosport, Fischer, Perfect Power, Lake Forest Sportscars... nice places to visit and generally very friendly.

Theirs the Auburn Cord Disenburg Museum about 2 1/2 hours from Chi town in Auburn, Indiana and is well worth the trip. No Porsches last time I visited but they have a couple of hundred really fine cars.
    Currently:
    67 3.6 Rocket "Silver"
62 T6 Outlaw Coupe "ole Yellow"
65 F100 Custom Cab Flairside Shortbed

Gone but not forgotten in last 2 years:
    67S Concours King
    67 912 Vintage Racer
    68 912 Flipper
    83 911SC
    93 Mo30 968

    too many cars before that

It's really a shame there's nothing going on at Road America while you're here (unless there's some private testing?). That track is a national treasure. It might even be worth driving up there (a couple of hours) just to check out the track and the town of Elkhart Lake. Seibkins will be open for a beer I'm sure!

Another worthwhile visit would be the Motorsport Collector in Downers Grove (western suburbs). Very nice memorabilia shop - and they've got a nice TAG Turbo Porsche F1 engine on sale for only $10,000.
