    NASCAR: Back to the Future!

Guess which magazine this paraphrased text came from:

... It's because this race in particular and NASCAR in general is phoney. Yes, phoney.

The rules are ridiculous, the vehicles are neither stock automobiles nor proper racing cars and NASCAR puts on its races with all the hokiness of an Elvis Presley movie. And with about as much class.

............ another phoney device for adding drama to the race is the NASCAR system whereby any incident on the course requiring the use of emergency vehicles results in a pace car being sent out to lead the pack around at very moderate speed ..... the combination of the frequent pit stops and yellow-flag slow downs also results in lots of meaningless and therefore phoney changes in the lead.

So if its a modern Roman circus you want to see, then try a NASCAR race.

Sound familiar? Well, this is part of a 4-page article on the NASCAR race at Riverside in Road & Track magazine ............. 1968!!! The more things change, the more they stay the same.

I am no fan of Nascar, but it is better than watching women's golf.

Can you scan the article? I've never been to Riverside, but I've read a lot about the course. It sounded like a very challenging track.
