    Maximum Speeds

Last week I discovered a road that my friends and I now call "Bonneville Jr.". It's an almost unused stretch of road with a level straight that is several miles long, a surface that is as smooth as glass -- and wide sight lines on both sides. All in all, a prudent place to, umm, stretch a 911's legs a bit.

I took my '74 Euro Carrera there for a spin the other day and hit a top speed of 155 MPH. Things were moving by pretty quickly, but the car was nicely hunkered down and felt stable. The tach was at 6,200 (7,300 redline) but I could really feel the wind resistance at that speed and things seemed pretty well bogged down.

I'd be interested in hearing what experiences others here have had with maximum speeds.

    Cheers,
    John

Low gearing takes some of the thrill out of redline in 5th. I'm at 134 when I bump the limiter, and that's all there is.

It's all relative, right? On a typical track day at Willow Springs, I get close to 134 twice a lap -- whish is 20 times every session, which means 100 to 120 times in the day. (I'll stop complaining. I like going fast.)

I'm not saying anyone actually didn't go as fast as claimed, but aren't 911 speedos slightly optimistic unless calibrated?

    This is probably more accurate:

I'm with Jack as I have short 3/4/5 (WEVO spec'd) and I'm hitting the limiter at 7000k / 140mph .....at California speedway in NASCAR banked T1-T2.

    http://www.carquip.com/parts/gchart/index.asp

Based on my gearing, tire size and max RPM the chart above says my max speed is 146.808 mph using my 17" whls and 145.094 on my 16" whls

I guess it's all relative anyway, oh, and I remember the wife taking my speedo out a year or so back and sending it up to North hollywood speedo for a calibration / cleaning....so I figure I have to run with the numbers I was able see as I glanced down at the end of the front straight.

    On the 'Streets of Willow'
    About 95 - Clockwise
    About 105 - Counterclockwise

On the BIG track at Willow about 125

    Flat out..?

    Maybe ask Chris O'Donnell…

A few years ago Chris and I went off side by side all the way through the top of 5th…

Me in my freshly rebuilt and broken in RS+ rebuild, and he in his newly restored RS lightweight with a newly rebuilt and dyno'd motor....

My speedo was pinned, but he had the stock size tires thus the more accrete speedo reading.

We did this twice within about 15 minutes ... and nether one of us could gain an INCH on each other............. God help us....

    .... and so it goes.......
