    Orange bar hood crest

    Saw this ad: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1965-...spagenameZWDVW
Exactly the same one just sold for $400,-. I got a second chance offer to buy this one (or a similar?) for $222,-. Are these really original?

    Cees,

This one most likely is the real deal. It's like mines and would try this one first.

    Good luck!

No. Fake solder around molded posts.

    Cees,

I agree with 70SATMan, I'll will PM you with some photos of my 73. Take a look at the repo orange bar badges they make now available from Performance Products here in So. Cal., now what do you think?

    Good Luck

There are a couple of good threads on Pelican Parts about a guy who was knocking these off and fraudulantly packaging them as NOS. Problem was as we informed the forum over there of some of the nuances, he was savvy enough to improve on the knock offs. He has gone thru several ids on EBay selling suppossed NOS badges and making a killing before being reported. He even went as far as soldering around the molded pins to make it look like they were separately attached pieces. That is one of the details he picked up on through our discussions. I don't know that this Ebay seller is the same dude. Could be that this guy bought one of the badges and is now trying to dump it. I don't know but, an early original badge it isn't.

If you look at the first item photo you'll see concentric rings round the base of the posts. All of the early badges I've had, seen, caressed have smooth bases. There are also smooth areas where it looks like the part number on the back was removed from the original unit used for the castings. The part number was only on later badges.

Raises one interesting question, at least

Certainly, advertising a repro as NOS is not right, if not outright fraud. Interesting though, to me at least, if the repro is so damn good it takes CSI forensics to spot the difference(s).

This relates, too, to restored badges, to NOS condition, with associated loss of patina for concours cars. Comments?

PS Someone should do a real FAQ on this, someone with pareto examples of the versions over the years OEM, later Porsche parts, admitted repos and frauds.

OK, you got me thinking...so I pulled two old badges out to take a look. Both of these are NOS from the late sixties...one has concentric rings, one does not. So now what? I also have a repo one, and the gold color is way to shiney, that one I got from Stoddard a few years ago...I would send it back if I could.

Well, I'm not a forensics expert but, I did watch the show last night

John, you could post some photos of the front and backsides of both badges and I can tell you what I think. There are at least two early castings with some subtle differences between them. However I'm sure both have the same soldered pin and characteristics. I'll try and go thru the many reference pics I have (my own included). I'll also search for the links from PP to post.
