    Question WANTED: 40-IDS carbs

    Hi,
I am a new member, and new to the Bulletin Board. I own a '67 911-S, which is in pretty good shape, except that the carbs are wrong. I have 40-IDA's which Klaus at NARW adjusted for higher delivery, but I suspect that they are just not quite doing the job. Rather, I have had other 911-S owners tell me that.
Anyway, I am on the lookout for a pair of Weber 40-IDS's to replace what I've got. If anyone has any leads, please let me know.
    Thanks very much!

    Pat;

The early, early S's came with 40 IDA's - with (not 100 percent sure of this) the addition of an enrichment circuit (small nozzle in barrel ).
Maybe your car is one of those?

Do a search here. There is a thread that talks about it.

The enrichment circuit is the difference between a IDA and a IDS. I am not sure there is a real difference in performance.

The switch from IDA (S) to early IDS carbs came after engine #960502

The IDA (S) and the IDS have bigger venturis and jets and it does seem only the IDS has the enrichment circuit.

    A vs. S

    Thanks John,
That clarifies my direction a bit. My engine number is #962099, quite a bit later than #960502, so the carbs must have been switched. I am looking into finding a proper mechanic here in VA to rebuild the IDS carbs from Oliver.

White Post ( http://www.whitepost.com/ ) seems overly qualified, but perhaps out of my price range. Does anyone know of a qualified shop in the Washington, D.C. area?
I don't mind paying a good mechanic what they are worth, but there are so many out there that are both expensive AND unqualified!

Any references would be greatly appreciated.

    White Post

Wow! I contacted White Post, and they asked me how much I had to spend on my car repair. When I said in the range of $10K, they said, what was I looking for, a tune up? I have later heard that they require a $100K deposit, just to start looking at a car renovation. Wow. I understand now that I was calling the wrong place.

    wow.

    Pat-

You can have your IDA set converted to IDS by Bieker Engineering, but if you must have the correct type, then you should buy some IDS and sell your IDAs. The net cost would probably be less, anyway, unless the new IDS set you buy needs rebuilding.

To be honest, I have driven identical cars with the same 901/02 type engine, an older one with the IDA "S" carbs, and one with the newer IDS carbs, and I can't honestly say that they performed any differently. At least, not that I could notice. Those engines make their peaky power because of the compression, the cams, and the timing--the high-speed circuit doesn't really make any more power, it just richens the mixture to protect against detonation. If your engine is making less power than it should and the IDAs are setup right for an "S", and your mixture isn't going dangerously lean at the top end, I would look at other issues.

    Smile Carbs

I would suggest talking to Bill at Performance Autowerks in Summit Point, WV. Bill's shop is on site at Summit Point Raceway and he is doing my 67S engine, carbs, transmission, etc., and is very reasonable. A lot of N. VA folks use him for just this type of service. Just a stone throw from you with none of that major deposit stuff. He is very knowledgeable, uses the right parts and it will cost you a lot less than what it will over there in N. VA.

    Just my $.02
