Magnesium case engines got the gold conversion coating. You can probably use modern zinc with a gold chromate. Probably the studs, too, although I would have to check the shop manual to be sure. The early studs are black oxide.

Most (but nowhere near all) of the removable engine hardware was cad chromate conversion plated. During the year (and even in ’69) there was some cad without the conversion (silver color). I don’t think any of the studs were plated but had the black (I don’t immediately recall the process) treatment.

In general a ’68 mag engine has the plated flat washers and bolts & nuts. Many have a black wavey washer between the plated nut or bolt and the plated flat washer. For instance, the sump plate had un-plated wavey washers and un-plated regular nuts (non-Nylock).

The ’68 transmission had the same hardware as previous (not plated).

On the engine and transmission there are very few split lock washers but when used, they were very specific and not cad plated.

By mid-year ‘68, almost all of the chassis bolts were cad with chromate.

My ’68 engine & trans have never been apart so one of these days I can do some good documenting.

    Best,
    Grady
