Alloy deck lid wanted - please read.

Some of you already know my sad story. Traveling to Rennsport III, I made it to Charleston, SC without a problem, shared a beer with the group and went up to my room. Came down 20 minutes later to find my car across the parking lot with the rear under the bumper of a Ford F150. Why? No reason except tiredness and leaving a car with a line lock instead of a parking brake on a slope without chocking the wheel.

The Ford's bumper was high enough to miss my bumper and the car slid under the truck buckling the right rear quarter panel and denting and twisting my alloy deck lid. I have a great person here for body work, but his advice was to find a new deck lid.

The car is the second long wheel base 911S Targa made: VIN 0002. Rod and Gary Emory rebuilt her as a lightweight tourer with a soft rear window, removable Targa bar and tons of tricks. I love this car and many of you who have seen her have said nice things about her. It really hurt to show Rod and Gary what I did to my car when I saw them at Rennsport.

So, is there anyone out there who would be willing to sell me an alloy deck lid? Do I expect a great deal because of my sad story? No way. I'll pay what you ask, and you know how much I need one. I do hope that my story might persuade one of you with an alloy deck lid in the atic over the garage to part with it. I'll owe you, and I always try to pay my debts.

I tried to attach before and after pictures.

    Take good care,
    Alan

If a man ever deserved one, it would be you Alan.
Hopefully with all the resources that we have here, one can be found, and you can get that screamer of a targa, back to primo condition once again.
Nice meeting you at RSiii and hope all goes well in the rebuild.

Hopefully someone can help Alan out here.... I sold this car to Gary Emory quite a few years ago and it was a 2 owner car with perfect shut lines, and most of the original paint still on the car.

I watched Rod build this car from the ground up, and it's "quite" a car to say the least...

Looking forward to a pic of the car back in perfect shape Alan!

    regards,
    Eric

Can anyone tell me what years the factory provided aluminum decklids? Were they standard on some cars/models/years and an option on others?

    Thanks for your help.

    John,

It is my understanding that the Aluminum decklid was original equipment on ONLY the 1970 "S" model but that it could be ordered as an option on the "E" as well as the "T" although most "T-E owners" opted for something more useful like sport seats.

This original equipment option carried over into the 1971 "S" model year until Porsche ran out of the aluminum lids.

It was a great "weight saving" idea that was to continue, except that Porsche received far too many warranty claims through their dealers because the decklids were being dented so easily. Owners wanted them replaced under warranty and Insuarnace companies didn't want to pay these in accident claims when they could pay for a steel replacement.

I can attest to this theory as BOTH of my '70"S" have matching gentle dents from people applying to much hand pressure when closing.

Actually, I have a friend with a 1969 911S with the aluminum deck lid and center panel fitted to his original car.

Not sure if his car is an early or late production 1969 car.
