    1972 Mercedes CanAm

McLaren M8F with a turbocharged 6.8L Mercedes motor. Built by AMG. Ran a few times in the Interserie. Too bad it didn't work out - would have been some interesting competition for the 917-10/30.

Yeah, I've never heard of it. It must have been fun working at AMG in those early years.

A few pictures of the car that made their reputation - the 6.3 SEL (actually it was a 6.9), 2nd overall and 1st in class at the 24 hrs of Spa in '71. The thing that I love about this car was that the interior is mostly stock. Hilarious.

That's ignoring the fact that it still has a rear bench.

    Damn that's a fresh ride...

I am pretty sure that car is a redo. Maybe the original had less interior.

Is it? The car is from the Mercedes museum I think. These pictures are from the Wm. K. Vanderbilt Concours in Newport this past summer, the car was in the factory display with some other historic MB race cars. I didn't ask anyone, but I seem to remember that the sign in front of the car said that this was the Spa winner.

I am pretty sure I read in my fathers MBZ club magazine that they did remake one. I will try to double check.

This is really bizarre. Apparently, they re-bodied the McLaren with an SL style body and entered it in Gruppe C racing in the 80's!!

The Mercedes Club Of America has a monthly called the STAR. The July 2007 issue has a AMG article. They show the same 300SE sedan and the caption is, "AMG's original race car has been newly re-created".
