    901 Transmission & 210+ HP

I'm getting ready to put my '67 back on the road after body & paint work. The engine has been built to 2.7 specs and will be sporting a new set of PMO's. With the Webers, it produced 210+ HP. When I got the car it had the original 901 rebuilt as a 4-speed in the conventional H pattern. I prefer a 5-speed and I have a 901 on hand and a 915 on hand, intending to install the 901.

My questions are: Is the 901 robust enough to handle the engine output? If I installed a 915 instead, what complications will I have to deal with?

    Thanks for the help.

    John,
I had a 914/6 with a High Compression 3.0 with 964 cams, probably good for 210-220 HP, ran with a 901 w/o problems, just gotta be careful in first gear is all. Sound like a great car.

Like Phil said, keep your foot out of it in 1st and you should have no problems ... except for blazing tires

If you don't do smokey tire burnouts, you'll be fine.

Funny you would say that. The P.O. converted to a 4-speed because he wanted to get first gear off of the weaker reverse spindle, similar to the 930. I think that's probably OK for hill climbs and auto-x, but when I run at Portland Intl. Raceway I feel like I could use more top-end on the straights. Also the 5-speed has shorter gears two through four.

The engine has 930 cams though - I've don't know if that's a good thing or not.

    IMO my 901 5 speed has a too short 1st a too tall 2nd and 5th but 3rd and
    4th are just right.

    John,
You don't want 930 cams in a NA motor, you don't even really want them in a turbo motor.

    210 etc

With 210 going through a 901 the weakest point would be the clutch. A standard clutch will burn out if you try anything fancy off the line. Think about a comp clutch.

Strengthen the 901 (side plate and int plate), good clutch, no burnouts (no Porsche tranny drivetrain that) and you should have no problems.

I have more HP than that and have never had a problem.
