    Carpets for 1965 911's

Some help required from the collective early 911 brainstrust please?

I'm helping a friend with the restoration of his 65 911 interior. The car has an extensive Australian history, and there is only the interior to finish.

He wants the car to faithful to its history, it has not been over-restored.

However, just when he is set to commit to a type of carpet (interior and in the trunk) he reads something which conflicts with the conventional wisdom.

We have used Johnson's book quite a lot, but the low resolution, black and white pictures of carpets aren't much help to us in this digital age!

Can anyone with an original 65 send pics of their carpet please? If you have information on where to source carpet kits - that would also be appreciated.

    Regards,

    Justin

    carpet

I have a 65 911 number 1145 with 37,000 original miles. The interior and trunk carpet is the German square weave like the 356's had. My carpet is original salt and pepper look, black with a few white fibers. The drivers side mat was falling apart so I had Autos International in San Diego make 2 new front mats for the car. They actually weathered the mats so they matched the original carpet. I think there web site is autosintl.com, ask for Augaustine.

My understanding is square weave carpet as well.

I know that Tony from Autobahn Interiors recently did a complete interior for a 1964 production 911 that's being completely restored.

You can reach Tony at www.autobahninteriors.com

Square weave is the ticket. Looks really great on an early car. I got a set of the german stuff from World Upholstry and is was quite good.

    Justin,

I have 65 no. 301111. It has the german square weave in the trunk just like the 356 cars and plush in the interior. Talk to Tony, he did the 64 and it came out good.

Need to make another post regarding Tony.... when he opened his business up, he went out to some of the best restorers in the business to get original interiors etc. to re-do all of his patterns..... he's now got the best "original" patterns of any interior specialist. Others have "corrected" patterns that make installation easier (that means less man hours to install... and time is money!). There's a reason why people like Nate Cantwell and Skip Shirley use Tony...

Here are some photos of the interior of 300771 that I recently sold (but have not been paid for): http://picasaweb.google.com/unfinishedprojects56

I believe the interior to be entirely original with the exception of the front seats. Notice the leather shift boot and binding around the heat lever. The car even has original door seals. The front trunk carpet is squareweave, but the cabin is not.
