Thread: Carpets for 1965 911's

  1. #11
My new car is a June 66 / 911 which has been parked since 86. When I checked the carpet earlier today, I noticed that the trunk is square weave as shown, however the compartment is not. It's more black hairy.

My June 65 had the same combo. Others have this as well?

I have a dealer parts department sample book from the late 60s, which shows the different carpet materials for 356 B and C and for 911 0 series, 911A and 911 B series. Your friend's car would be a 911 0 series, I believe.

The options that I find are: red velour (color no. 000) and a grey/charcoal velour (color no. 700). The square weaves are only indicated for the 356s, as to which there is red (also numbered as 000), blue/gray (200), gray (300), beige (400), beige/white (500) and charcoal (700). I am missing one sample for 356C, designated as color 600 and probably a tan or light brown, based on its place in the sequence of samples.

There are some additional colors for 911A and 911B series, but nowhere does it show square weave for any 911 "0 series" car.

I can try to post some close ups of the two samples shown in my book for the 0 series, if you think that it might help.

My 1966 911 (long gone) had square weave in the trunk. This I recall distinctly, but I can't remember what kind of carpet it had in the passenger compartment, only that it had rubber mats in the footwells.

    Salt and pepper

I believe that Salt and pepper square weave for the interior and trunk is correct for a 65

Could we get some closeup photos of your carpet? There can't be too many low mile, non-barn type, 65's around. Good interior photos of a car like your's would be a great resource.

    Zithlord,

Chassis is 300882. It is presently in the Southern Highlands of NSW (about 100 miles south of Sydney, Australia).

History from 1966/7 is known, we are trying to clarify a few points before then.

Picture to follow soon. It is one of at least 4 other 65 901 /911's in Australia

    I could be wrong

After taking some pictures and looking at the carpet again i think that I was wrong on the carpet in chassis #301145 The original carpet in the trunk is the square weave stiff carpet. I thought the interior carpet on the inside was worn down square weave but it seems like a more plush fuzzy carpet. I have picture and if you e-mail me direct I will send you photo's. Thanks Ron rthomas@heattfs.com

    Sample of 1965 car's carpets

GAHN.com lists a number of different products for German Carpet

    Haargarn (German, 40" wide)
Multiloop, solid and two tone ((German, 65" wide)
    PC Velour (Porsche, 60" wide)
    Perlon (Porsche Trunk, 48" wide)
    Sliverknit (Porsche, 60" Wide)
    Square Weave (German, 52"-54" Wide)
    Velour (German, 60" Wide)
    Velour (German, Backless, 60" Wide)
Wilton I Wool (English, 40" Wide)
Wilton I Wool (English, 50" Wide)

Each is different by width and price/part number. So it seems they are each a unique product.

GAHN has a search feature for each model and year Porsche. (The 1985 911 coupe only lists the Sliverknit. (It seems the name is S-L-iver not SILver knit -like the hunk of wood that gets stuck in your hand as opposed to the color of metal coins).

The 1967 911 lists two options for interior carpet - Squareweave or Haargarn. When researching the carpets for the 1964 911 the trunk was Squareweave and the interior was Haargarn. After cutting up samples of the material and sending to sources, (see photo below) Autos International had the right stuff and could meet the deadline - so we went with them. We did have a few rounds of the pattern sent for verification - paper trace of original to them - first pass from them - sample cut and fit returned to them - final trunk carpet is a perfect match to original.

It seems you can choose samples from Auto's International, GAHN, and Tony - Autobahn Interiors in San Diego. Prices seem to be about the same accross the board for the same product. Less weight and quality/density (or limited color choice) of the material is the only way to beat the price.

The weight difference for an interior set of the Haargarn (looks live the velour) was close to 30lbs and the heavy carrera felt/Perlon was less than 12lbs.

I am sure Tony at Autobahn Interiors is fresh with the match for Eade's car, (squareweave trunk and Haargarn(velour) interior).

Sorry for the flash on the photo - the black plush Haargarm white highlight is not as obvious in real person as this hot flash makes it look.

Tom, I hope you don't mind if we use your photo.

Justin, the photos Tom has directed us to also show the rubber heel pad in all of it's original glory. It is black rubber with a hint (or whisp) of an irregular white trace. It is not available but the close match from Auto's international will pick up a use pattern (yup a little dirt is a good thing) and after it is "well used" will look very close.
