I found this car and the engine number seems to be from a 1965 but the vin number runs past the 1965, maybe some of you guys can help me figure it out

That chasis number is right before the break into August production. Some would say it is a 66 and I would have to agree with them but the engine doesn't jive with that chasis number and I would have to say it isn't correct for the car but a COA would verify that. Just my thoughts...

303525 is definitely a 66MY and probably 66 calendar year.
The engine 901449 is early '65, made before May 25, 1965.
Poor car, not much left.

2 screw horn grills and 3035xx makes this a dyed in the wool '66. The last 303 car built in '65 in my records is from December 1, which is 303129. Being 400 after makes this car a PY66 car.
I keep my records here: http://kenik.com/901_info.aspx

Is the plan for this database to be just '65 and '66 vehicles? Very nicely done, by the way.

Again please help me understand why there is so much confusion over this 65/66MY?? It is so clear. Where does this come from??

On one hand it is pretty cut and dried, but on the other hand PY65 cars are so different from PY66 cars that there is some confusion. Dr. Johnson's book doesn't help since it shows every PY65 as a 1965 in the VIN tables. Make sense?Originally Posted by boxster03

The little white factory spec book is pretty clear on this issue. These little books have more info in them than at least a couple $50 coffee table publications put together.
When I bought my '65 (300771) it was titled as a '66. I photo copied the page out of the spec book, and took it in to DMV when I transferred the title. The clerk was curious as to where on earth I had found a factory publication. We're lucky Porsche diseminated so much information on their cars. Most folks are stuck with Clymer manuals and the opinions of "experts".

Boxter; the reason is that a lot of Porsche books are wrong and state all PY cars as MY 65. This has made a lot of confusion and the fault has been copied by a lot of authors in their books. I have had quite a few discussions in Norway about this and it’s almost impossible to convince those that think they have a MY65 to understand they have a MY 66 but PY 65.
Tfiv; what is the "The little white factory spec book". I have a very small white book that came with my car togheter with the drivers manual. Its about 10cm'8cm. Is this the book you are refering to? (I dont have it with me just no at the office)
