    Modern air conditioning

Has anyone adapted a modern air conditioner from a late model
car to fit their early 911? I'm thinking of running some lines
when the rockers are replaced and possibly fitting a proper A/C
from a small toyota or similar.

Too damn hot here to live without.

    you are a wuss

it was only 42 here yesterday (for you guys who work in Fahrenheit that is about 108)

You have to wind down both windows and drive faster

Seriously i would be more worried about the oil temp than the aircon on such days

I will admit to leaving my car in the garage and using an air conditioned one in the past coupe of days

but apart from the very hot days like the last two i have not found the lack of air too bad in my car

    happy new year

a/c upgrade in early 911. Performance Air used to sell a kit (they no longer offer them), but there is no complete one stop shop to buy all you need.
So , what we did to make up sets for our clients was to
    1) obtained a 86-89 front evaporator /fan unit with "bubble" box cover- these have the larger fans and better condition o ring style condensers. If your car is RHD, you will have to fabricate a container for it, or cut out the passenger foot well for access. Same thing applies to the top cover. This alone may dissuade you from modifying the car so much
    2) factory under dash Behr vent and switch control unit- Well built and can work for both lhd/ rhd. The inlet is round and in the center. Outlet vents go across the bottom of the kneepads and distribute air decently
    3) new barrier hoses- these are lightweight, smaller diameter, and easier to mount
    4) rear lid condenser- again a later 84 up Carrera unit is better due to multi passes thru the core
    5) Carrera or 993 a/c compressor. When a bracket is fabricated the 993 unit will clear the standard deck lid and work even with mfi (been there, done it)
    6) Rennaire sub cooler / drier- this custom made unit fits in the left side fender behind the tire tucked up in the corner- improves output dramatically
    7) Front condenser- any decent condition Porsche o-ring front sub trunk condenser with blow thru fan will complete the install. Although a worthwhiel upgrade, the rennaire unit may be too thick if you run your car low to the ground . The factory unit with bash bar and protection grill work fine with stock and aftermarket front bumpers
    8) proper lower pulley and engine console mount< surprising that people forget that most early cars had the smaller console. This will not allow a double pulley to fit

so... find yourself some one here in the states that took their 86 -89 a/c system out, the 73 underdash vent, and finally the rest of the new bits so you can save some $$

fwiw- we charge $5k and up , depending on detail level and parts availability, for a complete install here in California

    good luck
